Ecstatic Arrow, Virginia Wing (2018)
In this post-Stereolab world, Virginia Wing tease the brilliance that can be achieved in riffing directly off the Groop’s line of metronomic thought. The duo bring in some fascinating, pretty details, rooted in the Lab but confidently progressive – plus horns. As a whole, Ecstatic Arrow is dreamlike, passing easily; but up close, these are gripping pop tunes.
Pick: ‘Be Released’
Y cuando ya estás allí arriba, preguntar: “Tell me: where do you go from here?”
“(...) Open up and let the forest fire destroy everything in sight, It's not that I'm exceptional, I only want to speak aloud, pull out all the tangled thoughts and try to sort all them out somehow
I know, I know the key It's written in my own body It's hidden in my own body From her to you and you to me
(...) Given the choice I'd press pause and play it all back in reverse and then I'd laugh at how curious the mirror is”
Virginia Wing: The Second Shift
“Am I always in the wrong? Am I always going down? Stuck in a memory most of the time, am I always missing out? I've forgotten all of the jokes, am I always laughing alone? I'm a shadow on the floor, I'm always waiting to be told
Follow instruction disguised as suggestion I'm always ready, I'm not always willing Not always open, not always choosing Sometimes I choose, sometimes I'm right
I'm going after, going forward I'm going after, going forward, faster
You're in the room and I'm in distance Falling to slowly to notice the difference
(...)
I meant what I said, nearly every last word I could be more complete If I get close enough If I get close enough”
Virginia Wing: The Female Genius
“No autumn bloom or summer snow No secrets passed in envelopes No streetlight glare or hardwood floors To lie on when there's no more chairs No offers proposed that end up cold No half-baked program just for show
(...)
No more aspirin for a quick relief No carrier bags for discount needs No more lessons taught to avoid reform No more history made with old mistakes No working weeks that pass like rain Or holidays that don't compensate
(...)
Bright yellow light and cloudless skies Uncancel the future and welcome July And after that, tomorrow Say your blessings now and be glad You have arrived”
Virginia Wing: Pale Burnt Lake
“I have a question I can’t quite phrase, an uncanny feeling of being misled, part of the choir but only really another instrument
I never noticed How I became A delicate object Under a frame (...) And a note in your hand might give you advice Like a lingering thought or light in the sky And a circular sign might tell you a truth About things that you want And things that you choose
How do you cut a tie you can’t see? With endless lines calling to receive, can you avoid the fear and deceit by closing your eyes and joining a dream? In each way undefined
I made a promise and I swore, if I ever were to find a solution, I’d gladly give all of myself over and over and over and over I have a message to relay as everything falls into a game, I can perceive a certain release, a season reversed before a night that is sheltered and still Like a temperate child Or a promise fulfilled And daughters will speak Without needing to please Every father or friend Who has learned to critique Any voice beyond his

And now that I’m sure, I won’t hesitate or try to find an excuse not to open and walk through the door”
