one of, if not THE, strangest psychics known to science is a young woman going by the name 'eris'. she's capable of something that nothing else ever recorded, psychic or ghost, is capable of doing: manipulating the corporeality of matter, rather than ectoplasm. to put it plainly, she can walk through walls and turn invisible.
more under da cut
her age and background are largely unknown, including her actual name. she's probably in her late teens to early 20s, but seems to have experienced considerable neglect as a child; prior to her current living arrangement she was homeless.
she currently resides in a as-of-yet-unnamed research institute. she's there of her own free will--after all, it's not like they can keep her from leaving--and has made.... friends(?) with a number of other psychics there. Everyone loves her soooo much and they all love finding random piles of hair places they LOVE it
psychics as a whole could be described as humans (and other animals, but there's a lot less research on that front) with souls that act more like ghosts--being able to move independently, change their corporeality, and/or process sensory information. eris, then, is a person with not only a more ghost-like soul, but a more ghost-like body.
her abilities aren't without their drawbacks and limitations, however. while she can pull dead cells (like keratin) out of phase with a lot of concentration, usually hair doesn't go along for the ride, and if she phases too quickly without thinking about it, she can even lose a layer of skin. the amount of time she can spend out of phase is limited too; firstly by how long she can go without air and secondly by how long she can spend completely insulated without her body heat cooking her. (she also can't see if she makes her eyeballs invisible.) perhaps most notably, she can't pull any matter out of phase that isn't specifically her own body; this is because her ability hinges specifically on the fact that she isn't quiiiite made of normal matter.
Follow up question for the vampires: what's your favorite medium to receive emotional charge?
blood is, generally, the easiest and most efficient method, but hedge is kind of a neurotic weirdo. Also, the blood match drinks out of wine glasses is purely for show; if it ain't fresh, there's no "nutrition".
here are some other psychics that are often around in the same place as eris lives. (eris is in the background.)
firstly we have ROBIN who i ammmm still figuring out the exact nature of, but i think her* main thing is that she has a sort of supercharged imaginary friend thing going on. She has a sparkledog in real life and it's a ghost. she can't directly see ghosts that aren't already capable of becoming visible but she can communicate with them. that all being said, she isn't actually one of the subjects being studied! her dad is a researcher there and she just likes hanging out with the cool kids.
secondly, SEAN. sean has telekinetic abilities--he can extend parts of his soul beyond his body and make corporeal gripping surfaces to pick stuff up. pictured below.
he's got much stronger telekinesis than usual--most telekinetics can only exert enough force to lift about 10 pounds, but he can lift much heavier objects, including himself (albeit only a few inches and for a few seconds). he originally connected with the institute after being hospitalized for a seizure.... because he tried to levitate something too heavy on a dare........ don't give yourself a soul hernia, folks.
(he also has white hair for reasons.)
THIRD. we got. sofia. sofia is an enigma. she is also not a research subject, but instead works for one of the organizations funding the place. her abilities are some kind of telepathic, but no one is quite sure what she can actually do. i'll uh. i'll figure her out later. Don't worry about sofia.
*robin's gonna be a they/them in like 2 years, give her time
i'll post more pictures of these guys ummmmmmmmm Later
it is unclear whether these ghosts have evolved naturally or are spontaneously generated, but there have been enough reports that this is likely a species and not a single unique instance.
