Sad to hear that legendary Civil War historian and former Chief Historian of the National Park Service Ed Bearss has died at the age of 97! Bearss was an icon among Civil War circles. Fields of Honor is one of those rare ACW books that transports you back in time to the battlefield. May his memory and his legacy continue to be a blessing for our nation.

Legendary Civil War historian Ed Bearss (who turns 94 today!) has been nominated for the Congressional Gold Medal by Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia. From the Civil War Trust:
“Short of Lee, Grant, Jackson and Sherman, few names in the study of the Civil War echo as loudly as Bearss. With his booming voice and encyclopedic knowledge of military history, Edwin Cole Bearss, chief historian emeritus of the National Park Service, has been called a ‘living national treasure’ by the Smithsonian and received virtually every award in the field of historical study.”
“Mr. Bearss served with the 3rd Marine Raider Battalion during the invasion of Guadalcanal and the Russell Islands. He was badly wounded in gunfire at ‘Suicide Creek,’ Cape Gloucester, New Britain, while serving with the 7th Regiment, 1st Marine Division.
After returning home, Mr. Bearss furthered his education and pursued a career with the National Park Service, where he could follow his true passion in life: the history of the Civil War. He has a lifetime of accomplishments imparting the lessons and legacies of America's conflicts to new generations.
Now into his 90s, Mr. Bearss continues to lead interpretive tours of Civil War battlefields throughout Virginia and the nation in rain, snow or shine, recounting astonishing details of the battles from memory and captivating audiences with his vivid imagery and ‘Homeric monologues.’”
The Civil War Trust has created a simple online form to use to urge your elected representatives to support H.R. 1225. Please encourage the passage of this bill to honor a living legend in the Civil War community!
