Eddie Quist (The Howling)

This is the movie that got me going crazy over the werewolf myth, and this is the scene that kickstarted my obsession. They didn't call me werewolfsister fer nuthin' (well I called myself that but uhhh whatever haha!).

I watched this movie a little too young as there's a couple themes and scenes in there not meant for children, but it certainly left an impressive impression on me! I had loved wolves and the whole werewolf myth but the movies in that day and age weren't very good when it came to the special effects, especially the transformation scenes. The Howling & it's better known contemporary An American Werewolf in London changed the game in 1981 with their use of practical special effects to really show the change from man to monster.

No more cutaways and partial obscurement in shadows, or disappearing behind a pillar only to show up on the other side covered in fur (I'm looking at you Wolfman)! The bar had been raised, and frankly I don't think it's been surpassed! But I do think there are equally good CGI transformations-- for example I do like the ones in the Underworld franchise.

And that was game over for me, man! I was HOOKED! I analyzed the scene, compared the movie to others, researched werewolf media, read articles, did deep dives into the behind the scenes action, the whole nine yards. I've joked that I could probably write a graduate thesis on the depiction of werewolves in film, and my family asks me, "well why haven't you already." Yeah. Unfortunately, most werewolf movies are total garbage lol 🙄 There's something about the genre that makes it hard to get it right, but if I got into that, you'd really be reading a thesis-long paper.

Anyways, I could go on and on, but why not give the movie clip a watch and tell me what you think! Obligatory warning for scary effects, eeeeeek!

Rick Baker was originally hired to do the werewolf effects on The Howling, before a certain John Landis aggressively took him off the picture to work on American Werewolf in London instead. Baker passed the buck to Rob Bottin, who would utilize similar 'change o head' puppets like Baker did on AWIL.

The earliest change-o-head puppet, devised by Baker and Bottin both in the early stages of the project, was used for the transformation of TC Quist at the film's climax (first image). The other change-o-heads meanwhile, were made for the Eddie Quist transformations. Several of these change-o-head puppets were made for the different stages of Quist's morphing.

The early stages of the transformation were realized via makeup appliances designed by Greg Cannom, who bought a lot of condoms (not used ones, thankfully) to act as air bladders placed on Picardo's legs, chest, shoulder and neck, to simulate his muscles rearranging into a lupine shape - the air bladder on the neck (which was actually a hot water bottle) proved to be a hazard, as Picardo would not be able to breathe when they inflated.

Nanny Martha made a mistake & let the werewolf Babies out of their kennel cribs too early!
