Day 4: tonight for my #365classicmoviechallenge I’m watching the 1950 musical “Summer Stock” starring Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Gloria DeHaven, Eddie Bracken & Marjorie Main 😊 This is the last major film Judy did with MGM the studio that she was a part of for 15 years with hit films like Babes In Arms, For Me & My Gal, Easter Parade, Meet Me In St. Louis and of course The Wizard of Oz 😊 this movie came out at a time when Judy was going through some personal troubles and conflict with her studio. June Allyson was supposed to originally play the lead role of Jane because Judy was suspended from MGM at the time due to her health and consistent problems on set with the cast and crew of some of her films that costed MGM money. But she came back to take the lead role once she got out of suspension although on set she still faced personal troubles it wasn’t as bad and despite that the film still did really well at the box office but MGM released Judy from her contract shortly after the success of the film and Judy mutually agreed to it and wouldn’t be in another film for 4 years This is the 3rd and final film that Judy and Gene did together with the first two being “For Me & My Gal” in 1942 (his film debut that catapulted him into instant stardom) and “The Pirate” In 1948. The actor & dancer was already a huge star by this time along with the two Judy films with hit films such as Cover Girl, Anchors Aweigh & On The Town 😊 and his star would only get bigger after with other hit films like An American in Paris and of course Singin In The Rain 😊 #judygarland #genekelly #gloriadehaven #marjoriemain #eddiebracken #summerstock #mgm #classicmovienight #musical #classichollywood #oldhollywood #classicmovies
