APPLES - a book with forbidden love
Penryn and the End of Days by Susan Ee - forbidden love is usually the trope i mainly hate because it’s always that romeo and juliet type, how the families are enemies or “they’re from different worlds and could never work” and it’s so cliche it hurts but man penryn and raffe got to me. i mean yeah they definitely fall into this trope to a t but for some reason it still feels different to me because neither wanted to be together or wanted to sneak away just so they could be together; it was something that organically happened. it was something that was more forbidden for raffe than penryn and he was forbidding himself more than anything but he couldn’t resist in the end and i loved every second of it.
PINEAPPLES - a book with a latina character
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares - this was probably the first ya book i ever read and i was only 10 years old when i read it....whoops. but anyways carmen lowell was definitely the character i fell in love with the most and there were a lot of things that she felt that i felt as well. and the story of these four girls’ friendship is one i will never forget. i also have a lot of characters that i headcanon to be, such as laia from an ember in the ashes, hannah wells from the deal, nina zenik from six of crows, lucia from falling kingdoms, and there’s another one but i literally cannot remember for the life of me. but i am pretty sure that stella in mara dyer, another secondary character, is latina as well.
WATERMELONS - a book that takes place in the summer
The Archived by Victoria Schwab - this book follows mackenzie bishop and her job as a keeper, a person who more or less helps the dead reach their final resting place. it takes place right after she moves to a new town and the summer before she starts at her new school and because it’s the summer she has more time and liberty to fulfill her keeper duties. it’s not the typical summer setting book but it’s the only one i can think of right now and still amazing and important dammit.
BANANAS - a book that is anti-slutshaming
The Score by Elle Kennedy - one of my favourite things about the score is the fact that it’s so heavily focused on anti-slutshaming. it’s something that dean constantly addresses, especially when something happens between allie and her ex-boyfriend and that is hands down one of my favourite moments. when i decided to reread the deal i literally could not wait for that part of the book bc it just felt so important and powerful and it’s amazing. sure, he has no problem calling himself a slut or letting others call him that but any time a girl is referred to in that way he shuts it down immediately and it’s wonderful. did i mention how much i love dean dilaurentis? bc i love him a lot.
MANGOES - a book with non-western setting
The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh - this beautiful series is set in the city of khorasan, which would be modern day iran. it is a retelling of the story “one thousand and one nights” (or more commonly known as “arabian nights”) and follows the love story between shazi and khalid, a boy-king who is perceived as nothing but a monster. it is such an amazing series that not only uses the original story to set its plot but also separates itself from it and makes the story its own. not only is it a great retelling but it’s a great, wonderful, beautiful, amazing series that i cannot praise enough.
POMEGRANATES - a same sex ship
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo - there is literally nothing about this book that i hate. the plot is fricking amazing, the characters are so intriguing and important that it’s impossible to pick just one favourite, and the ships are mind blowing. the relationship between jesper and wylan is still blossoming but it’s so clear that they are so into each other that it’s almost heartbreaking. as soon as wylan asks jesper “just girls?” and he responds with “no, not just girls” you know you’re in trouble. and to top it all off jesper literally screams at wylan “maybe i liked your stupid face!” which kills me every time.
I am tagging @connorscobalt @daenerysjon @eddiecastiles and @lilycolloway (you can do either tag game or both if you’d like it doesn’t matter to me!!)
