day 1: nightmares

In the early morning, despite Edelgard's desire to do nothing but lounge around, Claude receives a letter. He stiffens, almost imperceptibly, and then laughs, that falsely casual laugh that she had so hated when they’d first met. She’d seen it as dangerous, arrogant, before she’d come to know him. Now she sees it for what it is, his coping mechanism for keeping himself together. She knows because she has her own coping mechanism, how her fists tighten, her countenance gets colder, her nails dig into her palms. He’s come to recognize that mood in her too. If she’d told her younger self that she’d understand Claude this intimately, she thinks that young girl would have never believed her.

Kind of a sequel to my other longfic, if we had met later, a few years after Three Hopes's war ends! It was supposed to be much longer but time got ahead of me and I never quite got to finish, alas.

The Unification Treaty's Anniversary just happens to fall in the same year as the Millennium Festival. Although Edelgard is opposed to it, festivities commence at Garreg Mach, and the Millennium Ball takes place just as it would have before everything changed. But Claude has something up his sleeve, and Edelgard is determined to figure out what. For @edelclaudeweek! Day 2: Dance.

I usually end up writing post!three hopes edelclaude in the scarlet blaze timeline, but I admit, it was a lot of fun to imagine them within a golden wildfire timeline! Usually, putting Claude in bad situations where he has to flip things around to gain the upper hand is a lot of fun, but Edelgard having a bad time too is always compelling.
