Edible Flags: USA Flag Cake
On July 4th, I saw (on a non-flag-related blog) that some people out there in the world who have no connection to the flag world were making American Flag cakes to celebrate this country's independence. Although home-use food coloring sort of disgusts me (does anyone else ever have the feeling that if you eat red velvet cake, the red will just ooze out into your mouth and when you try to talk, only red liquid will come out, in lieu of speech?), I wanted in. Luckily, my sister's birthday falls shortly after July 4, and she does her best to plan her birthday parties around this celebration of America. As much as I like flags, she likes kitschy Americana even more!
So I told her we HAVE to make this cake, and of course, she agreed, and we were able to pair my greatest love with her greatest love into 2 things neither of us care much about: baking and cake.
24 hours and many cries of "IT'S RUINED" and "WHAT A TERRIBLE IDEA" and "WHY AREN'T WE CELEBRATING (OLD) LIBYA???" later, our hard work paid off and we were left with a transient gem.
What has this to do with flags, you ask? Please, continue on:
Yes, my friends it is true. We ate our flag and tasted the freedom mingling with sugar and food dye on our tongues, and when we were done we were that much gladder to be basking in our nation on Bastille Day and giving no thought to the French at all.
