ALTA41: WiT Hosts Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

Workshop date and time: Thursday, November 1, 2:00 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Workshop location: University of Indiana, Bloomington—Indiana Memorial Union, Dogwood Room Help address the gender and other gaps on Wikipedia relating to literary translation by editing articles on international women writers, translators, publishers, and other underrepresented individuals and groups. Working in a spirit of collaboration, we’ll learn to edit and improve Wikipedia articles to address these imbalances. Come with your own computer, connect with countless resources, and leave with a basic toolkit to continue editing on your own. This pilot workshop will be a safe and friendly space for all participants. Newcomers to Wikipedia and experienced contributors are welcome.

Women are underrepresented on Wikipedia, making up less than 15% of active contributors . . . Regarding articles, for example, Wikipedia has articles that would appear to reflect male interests, such as Pinup girl (since 2003), Hot rod (since 2004) and Babysitter pornography (since 2010). Although there are articles on Women in engineering (since 2007), History of ballet (since 2009), Women in law (since 2015), Women in classical music (since 2016) and Pregnancy in art (since 2017), there is a shortage of many other topics related to women.

Citizen Science Wikipedia Edit-a-thon - Join Us!  

Students, staff, faculty and the public are invited to participate. We will review selected science-related articles that are tagged [citation needed] and search for reputable, preferably peer-reviewed and open access sources, to validate or clarify those unsupported statements. Minor editing beyond inserting citations may be required. 

Accurate communication of scientific research findings is an essential component of the scientific method; participation in this process of documentation is one way we can all be citizen scientists.  Session leader: Alison Ricker, Head, Science Library.  Contact: [email protected]  Sign up on the Wikipedia Dashboard.

Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon: Spring 2019

Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors were women. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of representation from women.  Let’s change that.  To help change this, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery is continuing a series of Edit-a-thons to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of womxn and gender non-binary artists of color. Childcare, snacks from local businesses, and editing tutorials will be provided. All you need to bring is your laptop, power cord, and ideas. No previous Wikipedia experience required!  Everyone is welcome. Access to UW wifi will be provided for non-UW affiliated participants.

An editorial in The Guardian newspaper in 2014 pointed out that women porn stars were better covered on the online encyclopaedia than women writers. This ratio has changed since then but only because of concerted efforts of women editors around the world . . .  'You can edit in any regional language you’re comfortable with . . . We had a regular editor who would edit in Malayalam'.
