ANTI-VILLAIN. a character with heroic goals, personality traits, and/or virtues who is ultimately the villain. their desired ends are mostly good, but their means of getting there range from evil to undesirable. alternatively, their goals may be selfish or have long-term consequences they don't care about.

WELL-INTENTIONED EXTREMIST. a villain who has an an overall goal which the heroes can appreciate in principle, but whose methods of pursuing said goal are problematic; despite any sympathy they may have with their cause, the heroes have no choice but to stop them.

TRAUMA BUTTON. this is when someone suddenly suffers from the onset of repressed traumatic memories because of some trigger, such as another character unknowingly saying or doing something related to the memories.

FAKING THE DEAD. a character's death is faked. often the audience will think the character is genuinely dead, and their death will be staged.

SOFT-SPOKEN SADIST. not every villain has to sound like one. the villain's voice is instead light and low. they don't yell or intimidate, and might not even be impolite. they speak with a soft tone that seems even kind, with a warm energy... hiding the menace within.

SYMPATHETIC MURDERER. the writers will have a criminal who is intentionally sympathetic to the audience; sometimes to amplify the drama, sometimes to make the problem a true moral dilemma.
