"Ingrid. It suits you. A pretty name for a pretty girl."
In the year 1914 Ingrid was still technically a nurse student when an interesting patient was taken to the hospital by police. She heard of this "incident" and the various rumors that had spread about the patient: That when the police brought her she was dressed in men's clothing, that she was some career criminal hiding her identity, or worse.... One of those people who dressed in clothes not appropriate for their gender and didn't pursue romance like nature intended, instead in this woman's case, pursuing other women. Well, so one of the nurses had declared who had just recently read a published article in a doctor magazine discussing the topic.
To Ingrid this topic was familiar. A little too familiar. Of course out loud she condemned such "depravity" but her interest in this patient only grew. So, telling herself that it was only natural to be curious and that there was nothing more to it than gaining proffessional experience Ingrid asked if she could take care of her.
Ingrid met Edla face to face the next day. She was surprisingly...normal. Having recovered from the alcohol poisoning and fever, Edla was talkative. Witty. Easier to talk to than most people in Ingrid's own social circles.
Seeing something in Edla which mirrored her was at the same time comforting and terrifying. Maybe Edla also felt that way. Or Ingrid was reading into it too much.
Nevertheless Ingrid gave a good statement about Edla to the doctor who was assigned the task of a "mind evaluation" that the police had asked for... Something that Ingrid in her teen years had gone through also, just not because of a police investigation.
After Edla left the hospital Ingrid was certain that would be the end of it. But it wasn't long before a small boquet of lilacs and a card had been delivered to the break room. The card had a message suggesting to meet on saturday in Rauhaniemi. Signed "Eetu" (A man's name) but the handwriting was clearly Edla's.
Pretty clever. At least now the other nurses who had definitely read the card looked at Ingrid with excitement and playful smiles, not suspicion.

Context: Edla and Ingrid fall in love in 1914. A year long relationship ensues which obviously is kept secret from the outside world. In 1915 however, Ingrid is forced to marry and Edla and her seperate. Years pass apart from eachother. Edla as a working class woman suffers the harsh conditions, poor pay and hunger. She gets involved in worker organizing and strikes. While Ingrid lives lavishly but miserably with her husband, Erik who gets her institutionalized for "hysteria" for a while.
In 1917 Ingrid returns to Tampere alone with permission from Erik to continue working as nurse. In the fall it becomes more clear that the tensions within society are intensifying. The reds take over Tampere in 1918. A full on war breaks out between the red and whiteguards. Ingrid signs up as a nurse volunteer for the finnish red cross. (An organisation with sympathies for the whiteguards) One day she sees someone familiar, in the uniform of the reds. Edla has joined the women's guard of the reds.
