“About Feelings and Words on Paper”
-Edward anonymously leaves origami birds to Ling at school.
-Ling gets bullied by his teachers and some classmates.
-Edward likes Ling, but is too shy to approach him.
-At the start, Ling doesn’t like to see those paper birds hidden in his stuff, because he’s too paranoid and thinks it might be another prank.
-Ling is bullied because he’s quiet, and some teachers pick on him just because they can, since he’s an easy target, and his mother (Ling’s only relative) doesn’t speak English.
-He’s a member of the jiu-jitsu club, and that’s where Edward really notices him for the first time, as the short boy is in the school’s team.
-It’s Ling’s first time with martial arts, but he’s a natural. Edward can’t stop looking at the raven haired boy, his strong arms and agile, delicate hands. The next day, the blond can’t stop thinking about the newbie’s quiet melodic voice, and his tired, soft smile.
-Ling’s a very talented drawer. But he’s afraid to show his work to people.
-The first time he opens one of the origami instead of throwing it away, he notices that the person has been leaving encouraging messages. In that one they were complimenting his drawings, after reassuring Ling that they hadn’t been snooping, just saw him drawing while riding the bus one of these days. Ling had been crying that day, feeling lonely, since his mother had to work really hard to keep him in a good school, and lately he’d been barely seeing her. But that message made him cheer up enough to even build up the courage to show his art to a teacher, who compliments him and puts Ling in advanced classes.
-Something that happens frequently at classes is people making fun of his slight accent, so Ling tries to talk as little as possible. But sometimes, teachers will ask him to solve a problem, which is what happens at chemistry (his worst subject), in a Monday. He gets it wrong, mostly because he’s nervous, and around him some idiots start to imitate him, exaggerating his accent. That’s when a voice at the back of the class says “I hope you fuckers know that acting like racist, brainless pieces of trash, doesn’t make you smarter than anyone.” The class goes quiet, the teacher just cleans his throat, says “Language, kids”, and the lesson moves on. Ling is grateful for whoever got his side this time, but is too timid to turn away and see who the person is. He thinks he might have heard that voice before…
-The origami keep appearing in his locker, his desk, and even in his bag. Ling is happy to know that someone cares about him, but he’d rather get to know his new friend in person. Prompted by one of the messages that said “I wish we could play together this new game that I got”, he writes an answer and leaves it at his own desk.
-They then start to communicate via little notes, and Ling catches himself wanting to know them, even more than before. However, he thinks the person might not be willing to be seen with him, and would stop talking with Ling if he were to mention meeting in person.
-Meanwhile, in jiu-jitsu club, Ling admires a certain short blond guy, who really scares him because of said boy’s face when throwing people on the ground, but whom Ling finds cute anyway.
-One day, Ling has a shared class with the guy, and notices he’s using a purple ink pen that is the same color as the one the person in the notes uses. He thinks it might just be a coincidence, but can’t help getting excited. Ling starts paying attention to the boy named Edward, noticing his no fucks given attitude, his intelligence. And even though he could be really intimidating at times, the guy could also smile big and pretty, relaxed around his friends.
-On another day, Ling is picked to spar with Edward during jiu-jitsu practice. The blond boy has a really stoic expression, and Ling feels uncomfortable, but gets to it anyway. They’re moving on the ground, and Ling has the upper hand. He tries to put Edward in a headlock, which is intercepted by the latter’s hand in the last second. In an effort to remove it, Ling ends up with his whole face pressed to the short boy’s neck. In the heat of the moment, his lips find Edward’s ear and something really weird happens: he hears a strange, chocked sound, and in the next second, Ling’s the one being choked and having to tap out.
-When the teacher asks them to exchange handshakes, Edward won’t look at him, but his face is redder than his practice partner’s probably is. Edward says a mumbled thank you, and when Ling leaves the tatami to hydrate, the former taps his shoulder to say, with a little smile: “you did really well”, leaving right after to go to the toilet. At that moment, Ling somehow is sure that Edward is his secret friend, whom he really wants to be something more with.
-The next time they have a shared class, Ling walks to Edward’s desk and takes the unoccupied chair. The blond boy looks really surprised, which makes him look even smaller and cuter. Ling is really nervous though, so he just sits there without saying anything until the end of the class, when he takes a heart origami out of his pocket and leaves it on the other boy’s desk. However, the raven haired boy doesn’t stay long to watch the reaction, just practically runs out of the door.
-When Ling reaches the stop, the bus is already there. He’s going up the stairs when he notices a familiar voice screaming “hold the fucking door!!” Ling holds it open and watches as Edward runs to the bus in an impressive speed, considering his short legs. When he gets on it, Edward locks eyes with Ling. With a determined look, the boy passes through the gate, takes Ling’s hand and leads them to the back seats.
-Edward breaths deeply, and while still holding the hand of a very nervous and flustered Ling, takes a piece of paper out of his pocket , holds it in front of the taller boy’s face and says:
-“First of all, stealing other people’s idea is not nice man. Second of all: of course I want to talk to you personally, dumbass. I was just afraid I would start waxing poetic about your hair, or something equally embarrassing, if I tried talking to you without building the courage first.”
-They go to Edward’s house, where Ling spends the entire afternoon getting to know Edward’s mother and little brother, their dog Alexander, Edward’s room, Edward’s nonexistent drawing skills, Edward’s love for his family, Edward’s passion for science, Edward’s scent after a shower, Edward’s nagging voice, Edward’s soft smile, Edward’s blushing face, and Edward’s tone when he says: “I like you”.
Hi! Hope you liked my drabble. Just wanted to let you know that if this feels awkward, it might be because A: this is my first time writing something that resembles a fic, and B: English is not my first language, so bear with me, please ‘^^
If you like the story, feel free to write a full length fic with it!
Have a wonderful Edling week <3
