Greek gods: crash course (the details will be bracketed) pt.1
*u can ignore the brackets if you want surface level info only, it just doesn't sit right with me to swallow em kids- erm- words
It aallll starts with a love(there was none) story. The primordial deities of sky, Uranus, (father) and earth, Gaia, (mother) did the deed even before birds and bees were invented, and the first generation of immortals were born. Primordial deities as in, they were the physical sky and earth, just with character. Now let me go through a name change real quick and be frank, the kids were monstrous. With many many hands and many many eyes and the strength of typhoons and earthquakes, they represented natural calamities.
These kids were trapped in greek hell equivalent by daddy cus they didn't meet the beauty standard. In hell. Deep inside the EARTH. The children given birth to by the mother were thus forced inside.the children were imprisoned inside her body. This was obviously heartbreaking, and physically, painful for her. This is an important turning point of the couple's relationship.
[These were the immortal cyclopes (mix up happens since there's two kinds of cyclopes and thus I clarified) and hecatoncheires(don't even try) who had a 100 hands and 50 heads and SO many eyes(think about what would happen if they needed glasses). Then there were three cyclopes named Argos/Arges (bright) (you know ashur? The guy that does Argos and Mr plant series? Yea) ,Brontes(thunder) and Steropes(lightning). The cyclops were adept at craftsmanship. They were the ones to make hades' (god of underworld) invisibility helm, Zues'(king of gods and thunder and heaven and stuff) thunderbolts, and Poseidon's (sea god) trident. These guys (both cyclops and het-whatchamacallit) had immense strength, also due to their sheer size. But their dad didn't like em, cus he also became frank and decided they were too ugly to be up to any good and threw them in tartarus(Greek hell for the rotten cream of the crop, the worst of the worst which is inescapable and the worst punsihment usually)]
Then the couple had the second set of kids: The Titans. By this time mama had had enough. By their 12fth kid, she gathered her tiny army of conventionally beautiful children and asked them to fight against their father. Only the youngest, Cronus, was brave enough. Ambushing his father, he castrated him.This was the very first coup, and now the king is Cronus.
[There were 12 Titans. 6 males and 6 females(talk about equality!) Each titan represented a particular domain of the cosmos. (No particular order)(also, sometimes, Titans are added, some are reduced so...)(these are the usual set)
1. Helios- The physical embodiment of the sun. Usually people say Apollo is the god of the sun, but not rly... I don't know where that came from
2. Oceanus- you know what it is
3. Coeus- intellect
4. Hyperion- the heavenly light, light. Some say he is the father of helios, selene(moon) and eos(dawn). Here, husband of theia(light)
5. Iapetus- mortality(don't ask), violent death(ironically, he's the dad of prometheus)(the guy that was subjected to having his livers eaten by vultures everyday only for it to grow back and repeat for all of eternity), craftsmanship, etc
6. Cronus- time, harvest(the weapon he was given to fight Uranus with was a sickle)
7.Rhea- fertility, motherhood, wife of Cronus, mother of the gods
8. Mnemosyne- memory, artistic inspiration (her and zues' children are the 9 muses who were singers, poets, painters, everything art) (nemosinee)
9. Theia- heavenly light, sight, bright blue sky, shining of gold and silver (mother of sun, moon, dawn) (in science the theory for moon to be born is that a mars shaped object hit the earth, causing a chunk to be blown off forming the moon. The mars sized object was named..... Theia. THEIA!!! MOTHER OF MOON!!!!!!!!!)(NASA notice me)
10. Themis- judgement, divine law and order (all the legalities), oracles, right hand of zues and advisor (the blindfolded lady in courtrooms. She had a sword and scale only at first, then during the renaissance, to show impartiality, they stopped showing us her eyes)
11. Pheobe- light(srsly?) Nah, radiance, wife of coeus, her children were Leto and Asteria. (Asteria was pursued by Zeus but managed to escape into the island Delos and when her sis was raped by the same fing guy, and pursued to be killed by hera(his wife), she gave her shelter. Leto then birthed Appollo and Artemis (you'll know em in a sec) here. But in the end, Hera didn't hurt Asteria cus she was impressed by her dignity and unwillingness to interfere in her and zues' relationship.)
12. Tethys- freshwater, wife of oceanus, mother of water nymphs and stuff]
