My sister’s friend came over (who is the sweetest person with good intentions) tonight and I had to bite my tongue. I’m not out as genderfluid yet to my family, and try to limit talk about gender-related things. I stick up for LGBTQ+ when I need to, but don’t bring it up, or openly express myself like I should be able to. Anyway, she said that her uncle asked if her cousin was nonbinary or gender-neutral as she termed us (which is not true, we are not always neutral, you can lean to either gender or neither on anyday), my uncle questioned what that is. He pointed to me, because obviously, he thinks since I’m bi, I know everything about every LGBTQ+ person now. I tried to explain, without outing myself, how I felt (by saying like being non-binary means someone...) before her friend cut me off and said “they dress like a boy and a girl (again not true for everyone) and are like “studs in prison”. Excuse me? Studs in prison?! What the hell? This is where I got really upset. I like my sister’s friend, it’s just that’s misgendering, without meaning it. And you never know who it affects. Like it affected me, so just please educate people and keep mind of your words.

Just because someone's asexual doesn't mean they can't enjoy sex.

How is that such a hard concept to grasp? Yes, some asexuals are sex-repulsed and others are fine with it but don’t want it themselves, just to name a few, but there are asexuals out there who actually enjoy sex.

Asexuality (in LGBT+ terms) is the lack of sexual attraction. Asexuality is a spectrum. An asexual’s attitude towards sex depends on the individual person. Some asexuals occasionally have sexual attraction. There are some that don’t have an attraction but still enjoy it. Since this seems to be hard to understand for many people, I’ll give an example.

Do you enjoy eating food? Watching TV? Reading a book? Sleeping?

Chances are, you enjoy at least one thing on the list, or some inanimate object in your life. You enjoy the thing, right?

But are you sexually attracted to food? TV? Books? Beds? Whatever you enjoy? No, you are not. But that doesn’t stop you from enjoying it.

Just because you enjoy something doesn’t mean you are attracted to it. Just because you’re asexual doesn’t mean you don’t enjoy sex.

problems with words and their impact; retarded

People don’t understand the impact of their words, especially words that are so commonly used with no bad intention. For example, the word retarded. I hate that word with a passion, and get really emotional when it’s used. You may argue it’s a word to describe a poor decision or something stupid, and that is the connotation it is usually used in. But, being a disabled person, retarded really hits my heart. The challenges brought upon in life as a disabled person are never asked for, and the circumstance a person is in, is not a choice they made. They want to have abilities, but the thing is they physically can’t. It’s just not physically possible. It’s a real issue, and it made to seem like this person that is challenged, is not a human. These people are human. I am one of the very lucky few that can speak up, because I have not been mentally impaired, but just because I can doesn’t make me anymore human than people who are challenged. Retarded makes it sound like they don’t have feelings, can’t do anything, and just plain exist. That’s not how it is. I have been called retarded my whole entire life, and I’m not. But if had a mental challenge, would that be a nice world to call me? To dismiss me as the common connotation of a stupid person. Retarded is often used in a way like asking how someone could be so idiotic, and these people are far from idiots. But even with all this, retarded is still government terminology, someone will get basically government identified as stupid their whole entire life. And my issue is that is not right, because no human is stupid to the point where they can’t feel anything. All I’m saying is retarded is not a joke, it dismisses someone as a human, and just because someone is challenged, they are not retarded. So, please stop using this word because disabled people are the ones most affected by it, and trying to validate their existence as a human each day. But using this word to identify humans, it gives people a reason, a classification, and it can lead to someone being dismissed and judged. So, before you promote and joke with language, you should know the backstory and impact of that language on people’s lives. By not using this word, you will support people who are dismissed as humans, and if enough people stop, it will impact greatly. But one person can make some difference.

Hey folks!

I’m doing a presentation on Monday and the topic is “Gender - social and cultural identity.” - any ideas how to make it fun and interesting but educate the ignorants at the same time? What should I mention?

something i’ve been thinking a lot about every single time i see something along the lines of “it’s not my/our job to educate other people, they can google what im saying”  while yes that is technically true? it is also taking a gamble that  1. google filters gives them the same sources/information that it gives you 2. they use the same/similar process of sorting which results to click that you do

so with that being said......no, it is not your job to educate other people. but if you do not want to set them up to fail, giving them even ONE link/url, ONE full name of author and title of published work to find, giving a list of key words/buzz words (and not just “i said it in my comment somewhere!” but a separate list of “here is what to type directly into google/here is what you should see in the search result you click on”) will open up a world of resources online for them to be ABLE to educate themselves.

this PSA comes from personal experience. more that a few times i’ve gone and tried to educate myself and research a topic that everyone talking to me about seems to find resources about with ease, only to get increasingly frustrated with being unable to find literally any of the sources im being told exist. eventually every time i go back to the person or people telling me “just google it” and say GIVE ME A URL..................i click ONE link from that person, and suddenly my exact same google searches open up all of the resources i was being told existed and could now access, now that google had the url from that person in the algorithms it uses for me

i have also had the frustration of looking for information, sometimes even that i have bookmarked at home, on someone else’s computer (or public computers, i.e. the library or school) only to be unable to find it because google doesnt know it’s “me” (i dont log into google on computers that are not personally mine)

TLDR search engines taylor results to the individual, if you want people to find the sources you know exist give them at least one guaranteed/concrete example because if you dont it might not matter how hard they work, they will only find what they are looking for/what you are talking about if the engine they use thinks they want it
