If you didn't know, currently in the state of Paraná, Brazil, there have been a few protests going on. The state is trying to take away the benefits of public workers, making the money that was supposed to go to them go straight into the state’s '’funding’’. In other words, they want to take money straight out of our already poor public education system to put into the state’s financial funds. The protests have gone smoothly, pacific from both sides, until yesterday (April 29th), when our governor decided to bring 1500 military policemen (every policemen available in our capital) to detain the movement in Curitiba, fearing that the unarmed protesters would invade the assembly. There are approximately 200-300 hurt by rubber bullets/gas bombs thrown too near the protesters, rumors of deaths even. Most of those harmed being unarmed teachers. They had to evacuate schools in the area where they occurred because the amount of tear gas was invading the buildings. 7/10 of my professors were hurt today, two of those not even being able to attend classes. There has been very little coverage of the subject on national news and the harmed protester’s offenders will most likely go unpunished for their actions. I’m making this post because I don’t want this to go unknown, or simply forgotten. People have the right know what’s going on around the world. Our state is currently in mourning for our education.
