Getting ready for work on a rainy Monday like...
I love being an educator, but I would love it even more if I could get a little respect and some more pay.
I’d especially love it if I never had to deal with people who say I don’t deserve more pay because I “only work 190 days,” which is not true. I am on the clock for 190 days, but I’m spending my summers doing professional development (not paid for by work) and planning for the upcoming school year (also unpaid, off the clock).
And I’d especially love it if people would stop saying “it’s all about priorities” when I explain that you can’t raise a kid on a teacher’s salary. I’m not in that situation, thankfully, but many of my co-workers are. There are people who legitimately believe that we shouldn’t be getting raises because we should be cutting out luxuries like fresh produce or cable and internet (never mind that we use internet to work from home) instead. We shouldn’t have to be flirting with the poverty line (and don’t forget that some educators live below it) before people think we deserve to be paid.
Tomorrow is my first day of the new school year. Brand new classes, neither of which I have any idea how to teach. (I mean, kinda, but the last class I taught literally gave me a script to read.) And last year I had two other adults in the room with me to help me babysit but this year I’m on my own. Oh god.
Why am I so intimidated by the kids? I feel like they’re going to walk into my classroom, take one look at me, and laugh. (Which is dumb because I’m fairly certain that most of my kids last year, if they didn’t downright like me, at least kind of respected me.)
I feel sick and unsure and I’m not cut out to be a teacher. Kind of just want to cry and hide under the bed. Don’t make me go to school tomorrow! Or ever!!
gods, the 'I work with kids' braincell is getting stronger by the minute I just saw a fanart and had to devote mental effort to not saying "W-sitting is bad for you, buddy"
None of my favourite book characters are appropriate for Book Week….
Taking 17 hours this semester. 5 of those are two separate courses for my education degree. Slowly reconsidering my major because I need 30 hours of practicum total to satisfy those courses.
Kids that think everything that comes out of their mouth is the funniest shit is the hardest thing I have faced as an educator
I have a job. I promise!
The trouble with working in education is that you feel like a bum for four months of the year.
