Tenderness. Why Young Royals is unique. Cinema is full of spicy sex scenes. One character falls on another, ten minutes later, they are done. This scene after they have had sex for the first time, presumably they've fallen asleep and now Wilhelm is awake, softly touching his beloved like this. Be still my beating heart. I don't think I've ever seen a cinematic moment like this. Ever.
Malin knows who is in Wilhelm's bed. Washed in sunlight. They were interrupted. The rest of the story unfolds from here. August's treachery, Sara's betrayal, the clash of class, jealousy, fury, hatred, longing, final resolution.
First love.
Wilhelm's moment. The boy he likes is in his bed. After all their drama, and Wilhelm's drunken wandering on a football pitch, they are here. Simon rescued him. Wilhelm called him beautiful. They have both imagined this happening. Now they will make it real. Real and true. A declaration of their feelings for one another. Perfectly acted, some awkwardness and that perfect moment where they both acknowledge their young love. Timeless. Brilliant. Unmatched.
Again, the light, the contrasting colors, the outlined profiles, conveying more than mere words. There is heat and tension and anticipation. We and they are holding our breath. Enough! They've waited long enough.
Aw. he just had sex the night before. For the first time. With a boy.
He's looking at a naked Simon in his bed. Malin reminds him (them!) breakfast is almost over. Simon has to fake coming to school. They're bantering but it's a serious conversation. Hiding their relationship when all they want now is to be together. Malin at least keeps her mouth shut. There's so much at stake. Coming out. Class difference. The video they know nothing about but we, the audience, do. August the traitor.
For this moment, they are full of joy. We don't see this smile on Wilhelm's face very often, open, unforced, delighted.
He's waiting. Thinking. Or nor thinking. Feeling. Simon's lips were on his. He's not pushing him away this time. This perfect scene. Bold Simon. Making the first move. We can know Wilhelm's perspective. But Simon? Simon is sure. Simon knows what he wants. Simon has been fantasizing too. He wants Wilhelm. To kiss him. Only their lips touch, then what? We, the voyeurs, carry it forward. Do they hug? Do they feel the heat of the other? Do they go to their separate beds tingling? Vibrating with desire?
The light, Simon's parted lips, his downward glance. Wilhelm's eyes are open. He's looking right at Simon. He's completely awake. Alive. Transformed.
Master class in acting. Both of them. Brilliant. Light on Simon's chest. Wilhelm, intense, focused, alert to what comes next. The pause before the threshold, the one they will step over together.
