He really doesn't at least in his war time/ early post war pictures I'm assuming that is probably BECAUSE of the the war and the impacts it had on him BUT also at the time it was really common for men not to smile very big in photos for formality and to be seen as mature since smiling wide in photos was generally seen as being a little odd/mad and inmature untill like the late 50s into the 60s and since these photos of babe were taken when he was 19 - early 20s he probably would've wanted to be seen as serious
