This week was the 100th anniversary of women in the U.S. gaining the nationwide right to vote, on the #bobbypinblog. From the Victorian Era and into the early 20th Century, women protested for their right to vote, which was not guaranteed by the constitution. Some younger suffragists wore red lipstick at protests as a symbol of their independence and right to make major choices like who would make up their government. "Making up", as it was referred to at the time, was still kind of taboo, especially lipstick.
