The 𝖁𝖎𝖓𝖙𝖆𝖌𝖊 𝕼𝖚𝖊𝖊𝖓 𝖔𝖋 𝕳𝖆𝖑𝖑𝖔𝖜𝖊𝖊𝖓… 𝗬𝘃𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗗𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗼 🖤 ▪️ She started performing on stage in the late 1930s. She had a career that spanned 7 decades which included both movie and television. She appeared in numerous western and adventure films. ▪️ But it seems she may have been destined for the role that we most know her for, Lily Munster on the #1960s classic tv show The Munsters. Her son Bruce recalls that, years before her role on show, her rehearsal space in the basement at home had 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗖𝗞𝗦 𝗢𝗙 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞𝗦 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗛𝗢𝗥𝗥𝗢𝗥 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗚𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗖 𝗙𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗦𝗬 like novels about 𝖛𝖆𝖒𝖕𝖎𝖗𝖊𝖘. 🧛♀️ ▪️ She appeared in and made cameos in many B-horror movies toward the end of her career, appearing in films into the ’90s. She had a small part in 🅼🅸🆁🆁🅾🆁, 🅼🅸🆁🆁🅾🆁, which I both loved and was terrified by when I was younger. 🦇 ▪️ Years ago I read that her son wanted to put together a cookbook with her handwritten recipes for stews and cocktail appetizers. I’m not sure that book is going to ever come to be, but I did find this recipe, scroll through the images, for her 𝑬𝒙𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑪𝒉𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒏 𝑬𝒄𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒔𝒚 from The Dead Celebrity Cookbook. ⚰️ #yvonnedecarlo #lilymunster #themunsters #vintagehair #blackandwhitephotography #starlet #oldhollywood #halloween #vintagehalloween #hollywoodhistory #vintagerecipe #foodfromthepast (at Monster Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVAstuUgDxc/?utm_medium=tumblr
𝑴𝒀 𝑭𝑰𝑹𝑺𝑻 𝑴𝑼𝑺𝑬… 💐 Above the piano in the living room of my grandparent's house in St. Louis, hung my mom’s high school portrait from the mid 1960s. It had a pink velvet matting and my mom’s sweater had been hand-tinted pink. She had the 𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗽-𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗯𝗼𝗯 and I attempted to mirror her little hair flip when I was in middle school. That adorable high school picture of my mom is now mine to cherish every day. 🌷 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆! 🌷 #mothersday #happymothersday #1960sstyle #1960shair #1960s #bobbedhair #hairflip #pink #1960sfashion (at St. Louis, Missouri) https://www.instagram.com/p/COqG9rPgIlC/?igshid=99fkeddmelyo
Why are 𝑽𝑰𝑵𝑻𝑨𝑮𝑬 𝑯𝑨𝑰𝑹𝑺𝑻𝒀𝑳𝑬𝑺 so intriguing? 🌸 We all have many reasons to love them so much. One of those reasons is the design of vintage hair. Hairstyle design is exciting when you let your imagination take over and you should always consider design elements and principles. This hairstyle on actress Marsha Hunt demonstrates what a focal point can do for you. It also blends both balance and contrast beautifully. 𝑫𝑬𝑺𝑰𝑮𝑵 𝑬𝑳𝑬𝑴𝑬𝑵𝑻𝑺 include Silhouette, Texture, Focal Point, and Direction. 𝑫𝑬𝑺𝑰𝑮𝑵 𝑷𝑹𝑰𝑵𝑪𝑰𝑷𝑳𝑬𝑺 include Balance, Repetition, Alternation, Dominance, Contrast, Harmony, Progression, and Discord. This week was the 100th anniversary of women in the U.S. gaining the nationwide right to vote, on the #bobbypinblog. From the Victorian Era and into the early 20th Century, women protested for their right to vote, which was not guaranteed by the constitution. Some younger suffragists wore red lipstick at protests as a symbol of their independence and right to make major choices like who would make up their government. "Making up", as it was referred to at the time, was still kind of taboo, especially lipstick. The Lipstick Effect: A theory in psychology, that in the time of crisis, women buy more lipstick, because it is an inexpensive way to feel better. The women of WWII knew this. In fact, government propaganda and the media encouraged them to buy and wear a “tasteful” amount of lipstick in order to encourage good morale for themselves and those around them. So I will carry on the torch… I have compiled mine and other ladies’ in my audience opinions on drugstore brand longwear lipsticks. National Hair Day! That’s today! Apparently it is a day to be grateful for all of the hair tools and products we have that make it possible to do our hair. It was obviously started by a corporation selling hair tools and products. :) But that doesn’t mean we can’t still have a little fun with it too! So I have included a few photos here of customers that have told me how grateful they are for the Roll & Go Hair Tool. The one 100% Made in the USA. Not that piece of illegal garbage from China. The classic Grip-Tuth® Hairtainer combs' journey began in the 1920s. They rose in popularity significantly during WWII as a replacement for metal bobby pins that were hard to get because of metal rationing. And, thanks to a U.S. company owned by a woman devoted to continuing Grip-Tuth's® legacy, we are lucky to still have them today! At VintageHairstyling.com, find Grip-tuth® combs to purchase and see great hairstyle ideas using them! #vintagehairnerd #vintagelife #vintagestyle #vintagehair #vintagehairstyle #pinuphair #bobbypinblog #blogpost #hairhowto #40shairstyle #40shair #1940shair #ww2hairstyle #griptuth #haircombs #myfavoritevintageproduct #vintageupdo #hairup (at La Cafury Beauty School) https://www.instagram.com/p/B21jx1xgbFA/?igshid=e57j7biodypt
Norma Shearer...I just can’t get too much of her. The first time I saw her in the #1930s movie The Divorcee, I was hooked. For me, she really was one of the few actresses at the time that managed to play strong feminist characters so well. And no, her feminism (and most other feminists) do not think that men are bad or that they are better than men because they are female. Norma Shearer’s feminism simply revolved around the idea that she was equal to any man. What a concept huh!? Since we just passed the anniversary of her death, I thought I would give #normashearer a shout out for her #feminist ways, her knockout #1930sstyle and her beautiful #1930shair that I wish I could reconstruct. A lot of people do not realize her hair is actually #naturalcurl and she was a star at a time when that curl came in very handy for short, curly coiffures.
