Anderton Boat lift by Tony Via Flickr: Built in 1875 to allow barges to move up 50ft from the river Weaver to the Trent and Mersey Canal. Boats rise and fall on pneumatic lifts.
ICI by Tony Via Flickr: Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) was a British chemical company. It was here that ICI manufactured sodium carbonate (soda ash) and its various by-products such as sodium bicarbonate (bicarbonate of soda), and sodium sesquicarbonate. It was at the laboratories on this site that polythene was discovered by accident in 1933 during experiments into high pressure reactions. My Grandad worked at a site near here in the 1930's to the 50's.
Anderton Boat Lift by Tony Via Flickr: Victorian engineering. Anderton boat lift. Anderton is where my paternal grandfather used to live, just up the road from here. He worked across the river at the ICI plant. The lift transports canals from the higher Trent and Mersey Canal down to the lower River Weaver.
