Season 2 Episode 3: The Party
When Emily shows up to a Queens party, Derek and Casey try their hardest to cover their relationship up.
-EPISODE START-
*scene opens on the living room of the McDonald-Venturi household*
*Edwin is standing by the TV, looking through a pile of DVDs*
*Lizzie appears from the stairs and approaches him*
Lizzie: “Edwin, I need the living room tonight.”
Edwin: “What? But I was going to take advantage of dad and Nora being away for the night to watch movies with Ronny.”
Lizzie: “Well, you’re gonna have to go watch movies somewhere else, because I have some friends coming over.”
Edwin: *confused* “What friends?”
*suddenly, a knock sounds on the door*
*Lizzie and Edwin look at each other*
Lizzie: *calls out* “Coming!” *fixes her hair and smooths out her shirt* *goes to the door and opens it*
*several goth kids walk past Lizzie into the house, all talking and high-fiving each other*
Edwin: *appalled, surprised* “Lizzie, you threw a party?”
Lizzie: *nervously smiles, shrugs*
-THEME PLAYS-
*Casey against a blue backdrop*
Casey: “I can admit that I made my share of mistakes in high school. But that’s what high school is for, right? It’s for making mistakes so that you don’t make them later in life.”
*scene change: Queens house-party*
*Derek and Casey are dancing together and having fun*
*at the end of the song, Derek dips Casey, then leans in close to her, about to kiss her, when-*
Emily: “Casey? Derek?”
Casey and Derek simultaneously: *look up, surprised* “Emily!”
*Derek looks back down at Casey, then lets go of her quickly*
*Casey hits the floor and groans, then glares up at Derek*
*Derek gives Casey an apologetic look, but doesn’t help her up*
Emily: “Hey, guys!” *looks between the two of them*
Casey: *stands up and smooths out her pants* “Hey, Em. What are you doing here?”
Emily: “My roommate is dating a guy who goes here, so she invited me along.”
Casey: *nervous, smiles* “Great!”
Emily: “You two sure seem to be…” *looks between them, suspicious* “-getting along.”
Derek: “Me and Casey? Getting along?” *scoffs* “That’s ridiculous!” *elbows Casey for emphasis*
Casey: *glares at him* “Yeah, that will happen when pigs fly.” *pushes Derek*
*Derek stumbles a bit, glares at Casey, then looks back at Emily and smiles*
Emily: *chuckles* “You two have always cracked me up.”
Derek: *smirks* “I’m glad we amuse you.”
*Casey laughs nervously*
*scene change: McDonald-Venturi household - living room*
*the party is getting bigger, and Edwin is walking around, looking anxious*
Edwin: *walks up to Lizzie* “Liz, this is a bad idea!”
Lizzie: “Edwin, relax! It’s just a few friends!”
*there’s a crash in the background*
Lizzie: *looks past Edwin* “Hey! Put that down!” *stomps past Edwin to yell at someone*
*Edwin turns and watches her, nervous*
Ronny: *walks into the house, looks around, confused* “Edwin, you didn’t tell me you were having a party.”
Edwin: “I didn’t know I was!”
Ronny: “Well, I’m not really a fan of parties.” *looks around* “I thought we were gonna watch movies.”
Edwin: “We could go hang out in my room.” *shrugs*
*another crash sound comes from the background*
*Ronny and Edwin turn and look where the sound came from*
Ronny: *looks back at Edwin* “Yeah, let’s do that.”
*Ronny and Edwin start their way up the stairs*
-BLUE SCREEN SCENE: *Lizzie and Edwin are standing next to each other* *they look at each other, worried*
*scene change: Queens house-party*
*Derek and Casey are standing in a corner of the party talking to each other*
Casey: “I didn’t know Emily even knew anyone from Queens!”
Derek: “Well, obviously, she does!”
*suddenly, a random girl appears next to them - she obviously knows Derek*
Girl: *flirty* “Hey, Derek. Who’s this?” *gestures to Casey*
Derek: “This is my girlfriend.”
Casey: *simultaneously with Derek* “I’m his step-sister.”
*Derek and Casey look at each other, nervous*
Girl: *looks between them, amused* “Okay…”
Casey: *laughs nervously* “Excuse us.”
*Casey grabs Derek’s arm and drags him away from the girl*
*the girl watches them go, still amused*
Casey: “Derek!” *hits his chest* “Emily’s at this party! You can’t tell people we’re together!”
Derek: *apologetic* “It’s a habit!”
Casey: *looks around, then points to the other side of the room* “Go hit on those girls over there to throw them off our trail!”
Derek: *glances at a group of girls across the room* “You want me to go flirt with other girls?”
Casey: *angry, expectant* “Yes!”
Derek: *confused* “You are the most confusing woman I’ve ever met.”
Casey: *pushes him toward the girls* “Go!”
-BLUE SCREEN SCENE: *Casey and Derek are standing side-by-side* *they look at each other and put a finger to their mouths in a ‘shhh’ gesture*
*scene change: Queens house-party*
*Casey is standing in the kitchen holding a drink - she’s glancing around, looking for Emily*
*suddenly, a man appears next to her*
Colin: *leans in toward her* “Hey, I’m Colin.”
Casey: “Oh, hi, Colin. I’m Casey.” *smiles politely*
Colin: “Well, Kelsey. Can I get you something to drink?”
Casey: “Um… it’s Casey. And no thank you. I have a drink. And a boyfriend.”
Colin: *flirty, smirks* “I don’t see any boyfriend.”
Derek: *appears behind Colin* “Now you do.”
Colin: *turns, sees Derek, and smiles* “And here I thought you were the step-brother.”
Casey: *nervous* “I have to use the bathroom!” *runs away from the conversation*
*Derek and Colin watch her go*
*Colin turns back toward Derek and smiles smugly*
Derek: *laughs nervously*
*scene change: McDonald-Venturi household - living room*
*the party is way out of control - there are people everywhere*
*Lizzie is pushing past people, looking for Marti*
Lizzie: “Marti? Marti?” *sighs* “This has gotten so out of hand!”
*the camera cuts to Marti, who is having fun dancing with the goth kids*
Lizzie: “Marti, you have to help me get these people out of here. This party has gotten way too big!”
Marti: *glances at Lizzie* “No way! This party is awesome!” *continues dancing and having fun*
*Lizzie groans*
*suddenly, the music stops*
*the camera cuts to George, with Simon in his arms - he’s just turned the stereo off*
George: “EVERYBODY OUT!”
*there’s a groan from the crowd, but everyone starts exiting the house*
*Lizzie, looking nervous, tries to hide and leave with the rest of the kids*
Nora: *puts her hand on Lizzie’s shoulder as she tries to pass* “Not you.”
Lizzie: *looks up at Nora, nervous* *laughs anxiously* “Hi, mom. What are you doing home so early?”
Nora: “I just had this feeling we were making a mistake leaving you and Edwin alone in charge of Marti.”
George: “Speaking of… where is Edwin?”
*scene change: Edwin’s attic bedroom*
*Edwin and Ronny are sitting on Edwin’s bed, facing each other - they both lean in toward each other and kiss*
Edwin: *smiles* “This is just like Sixteen Candles.”
Ronny: *confused* “What’s that?”
Edwin: *embarrassed* “Just some stupid movie my step-sister made me watch.”
*suddenly, the door opens, and George walks in*
Edwin: “Dad!” *jumps off the bed, away from Ronny* *chuckles nervously* “What are you doing home?”
George: “It was a feeling.” *narrows his eyes at Edwin* “Lizzie tells me you had nothing to do with this party. Is that true?”
Edwin: “Completely.”
George: “Good.” *leaves the room*
*Edwin looks at Ronny, then sighs, relieved*
*scene change: house party - outside the bathroom door*
*Derek is walking around, obviously looking for someone*
*Derek puts his ear against the bathroom door, then knocks lightly*
*Casey’s voice, from inside the bathroom, answers “One minute!”*
Derek: *glances around, trying to be sneaky* “Case, it’s me. Open up.”
*suddenly, the door opens - a hand reaches out, grabs Derek’s shirt, and aggressively pulls him into the bathroom* *the door shuts again*
Casey: *shoves Derek into the wall* “You are going to get us found out!”
Derek: *offended* “Hey, you’re the one who keeps doing that super weird nervous laugh.”
Casey: *glares at him* “I do not do that.”!
Derek: “Yeah, you keep telling yourself that.”
Casey: “We are going to go out there and act normal. And not couple-normal. Normal-normal.”
Derek: *rolls his eyes* “Whatever you say.”
Casey: *turns and tries to open the bathroom door* “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Derek: “What?”
Casey: *turns to face him* “We’re locked in.”
Derek: *confused* “We’re locked in the bathroom?”
Casey: *hits the door, annoyed* “This is just like high school!”
-BLUE SCREEN SCENE: *Derek and Casey are standing side-by-side* *they both put their heads in their hands*
*scene change: Queens house-party - outside the bathroom door*
*Emily is walking around, opening doors, looking for Casey*
Emily: *opens a door, then looks surprised and shuts it quickly* “Sorry!” *yells through the closed door* “Casey, are you in there?”
*when she doesn’t get a response, she sighs and keeps walking*
Emily: *approaches and puts her ear to the bathroom door* “Casey, are you in there?”
Derek and Casey simultaneously: *relieved* “Emily!”
Emily: *surprised, smirks* “Are you in there with a boy?”
Casey: “No. I’m in here with Derek.”
Derek: *offended* “Hey!”
Emily: *chuckles* “So, this is, like, your thing?”
Casey: *confused* “My wha?”
Emily: “Y’know. The thing you do at parties. Some people strip, some people dance. You lock yourself in the bathroom with your brother.”
Derek and Casey simultaneously: “STEP-brother!”
Emily: *rolls her eyes, laughs*
