Part Two of got my love jumpstarted
Summary: So Derek Venturi and Casey McDonald, two struggling millennials, have met through an art project of their mutual friend and maybe, possibly, had a connection and made out a little, and maybe Derek kind of, sorta, proposed marriage? It's difficult to say, especially when everything is so fresh and new, and infatuation is a thing, and maybe that's all it is... But maybe it's not; maybe it really is the Real Thing.
Or: the first week of the rest of their lives.
READ HERE
the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be apart of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.
HEARTBREAKING: friends who i should be going to the movies and playing dnd and watching anime and cosplaying and going to the mall and having sleepovers and exploring the woods with live one hundred trillion miles away
SERIOUS QUESTION FOR MY DASEY READERS:
I have a fic that I've been steadily writing away at. It's only 3/8ths done but I'm feeling rather confident that I'll finish it this year. Would you guys rather I post as I write, even if it's weeks between updates, or wait until I'm completely finished it and then post the whole thing with probably a chapter every other day?
WOULD YOU RATHER:
have me post the chapters as I write them (with a very irregular schedule?
finish the whole fic first and THEN post on a very regular schedule?
Wow, okay. Not what I was expecting, but I yield to the wishes of the people. Be prepared to see a fic (1/8) arriving later this week!
The “mating/claiming bite” aspect of so many omegaverse aus and fics actually does make me lose my mind. Gorgeous. Excellent. Beautiful. Keep going. Omggggg you mean you’re gripped by this intense urge to sink your teeth into your partner in a way that symbolizes to both of you AND to everyone around you that you belong to each other forever and have a bond that can never be broken? You mean you’re all but consumed by this instinctive, aching, bone-deep want to bite them and claim them forever as yours, then let them mark you in the same way? You’re trembling with how badly you need them to physically claim you as their mate? Kicking my feet twirling my hair no wayyyyyy tell me more.
live laugh langdon
So, basically I'm working on three different Dasey projects right now (and occasionally tapping into something totally different when the muse hits (because I have, like, almost 40 WIPs, so it's not like I'm hurting for choices...)), and ANYWAYS, one of them is this Bodyguard!Casey fic—I don't really want to call it an AU because it's just post-show because the fun thing about Life with Derek is that if we ignore Life With Luca (which I'm happy to do if the muse pokes me) is that the possibilities for Derek and Casey's lives are endless. They could do ANYTHING—which means it's totally possible for Casey to change her major to become Derek's security detail (and short-term manager) while he tries his hand at being a rock star.
ANYWAYS, that one is also in the works to be done this year (guys, I SWEAR I am writing and you guys will be so happy come the fall when everything is done (please please please let me finish writing these fics)), but in case y'all are wondering what the vibe to a Bodyguard!Casey fic is...
Please listen to: "...Ready For It?" (Taylor Swift); "My Regards" (Maisie Peters); "BODYGUARD" (Beyonce); and "End Game" (Taylor Swift)
[ID: Despicable Me meme with Gru presenting a plan on posterboards. First step: That’s a neat idea! Second step: Someone should write it! Third step: I’m that someone. Gru stops and looks back at step three with concern/disappointment/sadness. End ID.]
there are two wolves inside me. one wants to write and the other wants to nap. they’re both in a cage called My Job.
don’t you hate when real life keeps interrupting your extremely serious commitments like your wip, your fanfics, and the emotional support music group you’ve been hyperfixating on for the past three months.
We write for ourselves, but we post for others.
(this came out of a conversation in the comments on a previous post about an author threatening to stop updating a fic because of lack of engagement)
So there’s this idea that fic writers should write for themselves and not care too much about stats or engagement,
and i totally get the sentiment behind that. if writing becomes entirely about stats and external validation, something important does get lost - creative freedom and joy, conviction in your own writing
but i also think:
“i write for myself, but i post for others.”
because posting fic is not only self-expression. it’s social. ao3 is called an archive, but emotionally it often functions as a community space.
people post for connection, for participation, for others to bear witness to their pain and trauma and grief,
and i don’t think most people are asking to be admired so much as acknowledged. there’s something deeply human about wanting another person to encounter something that mattered to you and go:
“ok, yeah, I see what you were trying to say. I see you.”
especially because fanfic is often people processing very real feelings through fictional characters at a safe distance, one step removed,
and then uploading that deeply personal thing into a shared archive and hoping somebody else might connect with it.
And i think that’s why it hurts so much when you summon up the courage and post a fic into the void and you get nothing back,
and then it’s like,
does anyone see me? does anyone even care?
The fire of passion and the power of prayer will defeat evil!
