Casey (as a mom): I just need 15min where nobody talks to or touches me.
Derek (the dad): Alright kids you heard her time to go outside and play hockey.
This kids: does mom hate us?
Derek: Of course not! You wouldn’t believe the amount of times she’s told me to get out of her space and she loves me! She’s just overstimulated and needs some times to calm her body.
Me: just want to see what people are saying about derek/casey on other sites-
Everywhere on the internet: INCESTUOUS. PROBLEMATIC. CONTROVERSIAL. WRONG. CREEPY. FREAKS.
Ok so people need to learn what words actually mean.
Sneaking back to actively posting like:
Casey: Okay Derek, any ideas for this project?
Derek: I don’t know. I’m not supposed to come up with ideas, I’m the hot one!
Casey: I’m pretty sure I’m the hot one.
Derek -under his breath-: you have a point.
idk if this is a young fan thing or new fandom culture but some of yall think fics are abandoned way too quickly. a few months or a year or two is not unusual to go without a fic update. sometimes fics take longer to write, other times writers have rl events, or maybe there's multiple fics and one gets more priority. there are tons of reasons for fics not to be updated every week or every month. it also isn't uncommon for people to come back and update fics after a number of years—ive read updates that took five, or ten years. people's lives change, but they still want to tell their stories. personally, i never consider a fic abandoned unless the author has said so; though if it's been a few years i manage my expectations. but a last update being a year ago is... generally not a sign that a writer has abandoned their fic
That! Exactly that!!! Writers have lives and writing is hard! It takes time. Stop assuming fics are abandoned!
Original fic usually goes through this same process before being commercially published. Readers just don't know that bc they aren't receiving it in bite-size chunks online. Large periods of stagnant writing are historically just another Monday for most writers.
This☝️.
To my Dasey friends - I promise I have not abandoned my fics or the fandom I’ve just been ✨busy✨but once I get the chance and the spoons and I will return to ‘For Nosebleeds!’ and ‘Isolation’!
A writer friend told me something that broke my heart a little bit today; they're going to quit publishing their fanfic.
My instant thought was that they had been trolled or attacked or that something terrible had happened in their life because this person is so passionate about their writing. It wasn't any of that. Engagement with their works has been going down, as it has for many of us. Comments are like gold dust a lot of the time, and just looking through the historical comment counts on old fics on ao3 demonstrates this trend very clearly. It was not simply the comments dropping off which caused them to decide to stop posting, however.
My friend came across a discord server for their fandom (I should point out here that their fandom interest and mine diverged a couple of years ago, we stay in touch but don't currently read each other's posts because I'm not into their fandom and they would rather gouge their eyes out with a wooden spoon than read anything Star Wars) and specifically to share fic in that fandom. They joined, because we all love a good fic rec, only to discover that their latest multichapter fic, which has almost no comments and very few kudos, is being hotly discussed in this server as one of the best stories ever. Not one of these people has bothered to say this to them on the fic. When they asked, none of participants could see the point in telling the author of the fic they apparently loved so much that they love it.
This discovery has absolutely destroyed my friend's love of sharing fic. They share because they love seeing other people's enjoyment, and fic writers do that through comments and kudos/reblogs/likes because we don't get paid. There is no literary critic writing a blog post/article about how amazing the story is for us to copy and keep/frame. There is no money from royalties. All we have are the words of the people reading our works.
Those people on that server could have taken five minutes of the time they spent gushing about how amazing my friend's story was to other people and used it to tell the one person guaranteed to want to hear that praise how much they loved it. They could have taken a moment to express their opinion to the person who spent hours upon hours plotting, writing, editing, and posting those chapters. Instead, they deprived my friend of thing that keeps them sharing their writing, and in the process have killed their love of it. My friend now feels used and unmotivated.
I won't be sharing a link to their fic, they said I could share their experience but not their identity. I know they plan to post one final chapter. I know they intend to express their hurt at being excluded from the praise for the thing they created, and I know they intend to announce that as a consequence they will not be posting for a long while, if at all.
So please, I beg you, don't hide your love of a story from the writer. It's just about the only thing we have.
If anyone has thoughts about "entitlement," fanfic authors are a part of the fandom too.
Picture yourself in highschool (I know, hear me out) you've hand written a story and give the copy to your friends to read. They read it silently and hand it back with no feedback (comments), not even a smile (kudos).
Then you overhear them talking about it at lunch excitedly and animatedly. When you try to join the conversation they look at you confused. Why do you need to be a part of the conversation? You already wrote the story.
You might be relieved that they actually liked the story after all, but hurt that they never thought to tell you. You might be even more hurt to hear that they purposely choose to talk when you weren't there, because they didn't want you there.
The issue is not people talking about the story other places. (There are some fanfics I gush about irl) It's about excluding authors who are sharing their works because they want to share them with you.
The comments section of AO3 or incoherent tags on Tumblr are the only guaranteed way to include the author. So, leave comments.
Most authors understand if you are anxious or unsure what to say. A key smash or a <3 go a long way. Comment on fics you read over and over again. (I love getting comments like "extra kudos" or "reading this again!")
Fanfic authors are part of the fandom too. Make sure they can feel it.

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
being insane about your own fics is so embarrassing like i want to scream and cry and shout about them but it’s like. my own guys.
What more can I say?
Does anyone else religiously consume fanfic for series you watched when you were like 8 and remember absolutely nothing from besides what is described in fanfics?
Honestly my best advice for any trans woman coming here from Twitter is to obviously install shinigami eyes so that you can tell who's a crypto terf or whatever. But also to genuinely just search terf and radfem keywords and just go down the list and block like 300 people.
And then to take that a step further (because no amount of blocking is enough unfortunately) when they start interacting with your content, don't just block that person, take the time to go through their blog and block who they reblog from. Then if you notice one name popping up in the notes more than usual, go to that person's blog and do the same thing.
Deny then access. Don't prune the weeds, scorch the earth.
Boosting this for all the new reddit girlies
Also? We watch out for each other here. My moots (and even a few of my random followers) will let me know if I’ve missed a name because Shinigami Eyes doesn’t work on mobile. It is ALWAYS okay to tell someone you follow “heyo this post turned up red.” 99.9% of the time you’re going to get some variation on a curse word followed by them deleting the post and thanking you, and the remaining .01% of the time you’ve found a new name for your block list.
This this this this this. Some folks like me tumbl almost exclusively mobile and don’t have shingami eyes via the app.
^^^^ i use mobile please please tell me if i accidentally reblog some terf shit !!!!!
im sorry for not updating any of my fics (specifically my lv one). i have no motivation lol.
tag your results!
!!!!!!!
okay we need to have an intervention.
i've noticed that people don't leave the same kind of unhinged compliments under fanfics that visual artists usually receive (eg, "i want to eat your art"), so i've come up with a list that you need to start employing when your friends send you their WIPs and when your favorites update on ao3 but you're having a hard time commenting something that sounds intelligent and you still want to support them
"you're like if [famos author] (eg, Victor Hugo if the fic is angst) was into [fandom]"
"well THIS has been added to my pre-sleep daydream schedule"
"this fic invaded my mind and consumed my brain like a spore"
"I'M LOSING SLEEP OVER THIS ONE, FOLKS"
"yOu'Ve AlReAdY lEfT kUdOs HeRe"
"this fic has me scratching at my yellow wallpaper, it's so good"
"this fic has me checking under my floorboards for the heart of a kind man i murdered, it's so good"
"i'm making my parents read this"
"i know only one chapter is out so far, but i'm going to print this out, staple it together, and put it on my bookshelf next to the canon material"
"this fic gave me another mental illness"
(you can only do this one once) "i made an ao3 account specifically to bookmark this"
"i'm going to print this out so i can eat the words on the paper"
and a couple that are just nice (without the feral nature):
"i made a custom playlist to listen to while i read this fic"
"this fic reminds me of [song]"
"i really liked the part where [x], it really stuck with me"
"i really liked this line, [quote the line,] it was so well-written!"
artists: draw fanart of the fic!! it doesn't matter if you think your art skills are good and it doesnt matter if it's just a sketch!! let the author see it!!
make a moodboard!! for the fic!! let the author see it!!
