Grime and ash grit under her scales as Threnody lowered herself to sit on a stray boulder. A poor idea from the beginning. The Tormentor lay overturned now, smoking with a rear wheel still spinning uselessly in the air. Efa had been quick to assess the damage, pronouncing the machine “completely fucked,” along with their hopes of quicker transport, though Wyll and Karlach had not yet been dissuaded.

Rather than change their minds, Threnody sat and began to remove the shrapnel embedded in her arm. Careless. Careless, all of it.

They'd seen a fleet of similar machines. More of a cacophony than a stampede from their position, a pack of growling, horseless wagons, raging against one another in the sunless hellscape. “Demon Grinders” was what Karlach had called them, and she repeated no less than three separate times to stay away from them.

“Best bet, you hear ‘em coming far off enough to hide. Can’t hide, run in zig-zags, they can’t turn in time for shit. Can’t run, you jump on board and hope you can take out the pilot, fast.”

“Why have them run on wheels?” she’d asked. “Why not have them fly?”

“They’re made for mowing down demons. Can’t do that when you’re hovering above the ground, now can we?”

“I can,” Efa chimed in.

That’d been the start of it. Or weeks ago, maybe, when her wings had first sprouted (sprouted again) from her back, bloody and caul-covered as all of her Father's gifts were. Once cleaned, though, Efa and she had both soared. Her ducking low, flitting between buildings and stalls, Efa barreling forward into their enemy, resplendent in her carnage.

They never spoke on it, but every once in a while, each would fly higher, take bolder dives across the battlefield, making sure that the other was watching.

Of their current predicament, though? That truly began when the they saw a smaller vehicle peal off from behind a rocky spire once the Demon Grinders had passed.

“Red Caps!” Efa exclaimed. “We can take out a couple of Red Caps, could even get ourselves a new Tormentor while we’re at it. Just have to catch up to them.”

“If you can catch up to them,” Threnody interjected. “Carrying the others slows you down. Let me take them by surprise first.”

Efa snorted. “ ‘Split off and let me handle it,’ that’ll go well. We’re all going.”

“I’ll see you when you get there, then. Unless you want me to slow down?”

The horde of war machines rumbled in the distance.

“I believe the gauntlet has been thrown down,” Wyll laughed. “How about it, then? Is our resident angel up to the challenge?”

There’d been a wicked gleam in Efa's eye then. Unfitting perhaps for an angel, but entirely her. “Loser has to carry the loot?”

“Done,” Threnody said, grasping her hand in a firm shake. “I’m already looking forward to having a lighter pack.”

The Tormentor landed back on its wheels with a creaking thud. Wyll and Karlach had only a moment to congratulate themselves before the engine dropped out of the chassis.

Her wings bristled. Strange, that they were hers still to call upon, even freed (deprived) of Fathers attention, his guiding hand. After her death, brief as it was.

It was a kindness, in a way, one last (albeit unintentional) gesture of good will between creator and creation. To not only excise the tumor, but to reconstitute into the larger corpus of god-flesh. A return and rebirth, with the dysfunction ejected, left like afterbirth on the stone floor of the temple.

Yet she drew breath still. A strange awakening it had been, her head cradled by Efa, with their skeleton commanding her to rise with a power she couldn’t begin to fathom.

Blood seeped from under the bandage.

She wondered how much of it could be considered mortal. She wondered, between Father and the devils, who would covet it more.

“Mind if I join you for a sulk?” Efa, largely unscathed, didn’t wait for an answer before sitting next to her.

“This is hardly a sulk,” Threnody said.

“Nah, of course not. A sulk would’ve made more of a bloody mess, wouldn’t it? Wait, shit, not like that, I mean- You’re still good at this,” Efa gestured nebulously. “But it’s you now, not because of the Bhaalspawn thing. Right?”

Wind howled over the plains. A dust-devil spiralled out of control in the distance.

“You’re right,” she said finally. “There would’ve been more blood.”

“Well,” Efa said, wings fluttering. “Tormentor’s still fucked. More fucked than it was before, anyways, bless them for trying. But it looks like we’re going to be marching out here.” Efa’s eyes hovered over wounds and narrowed. “When did you take a hit?”

“When one of the red caps decided casting Shatter on the engine casing was a good idea," Threnody said. “The bleeding’s slowed to a reasonable rate, I can still keep up.”

“Can you? You don’t need to try to be tough out here, Thren. I mean, we’re literally in Hell.”

The sincerity in her eyes burned. Bhaal's meddling in Efa’s life had been no secret, not for a while, between them. A mote of ash settled on her check, and Threnody found herself wondering not for the first time if the shadowed, bloody hand that’d sent cultists for her head had not been the same as the one that brought the Elder Brain to heel.

She wanted to ask if Efa resented it all. Reborn, destined to return to hell, again and again while Father lay in wait, his patience as deep as the depths of the Undercity to enact his schemes, and through it all, bound to his scion. To his regret.

Threnody sighed and laughed instead. “It’s not trying. I’m ready to march when you are.” She raised her wounded arm up. “Unless you want to kiss it better?”

Efa blinked, then grasped her arm and gently pressed a kiss to the gauze. She couldn’t be casting anything, not really, but the heat leaking through it made Threnody’s magic want to sing in concert with it.

She pulled away, and a touch of blue lip-stain colored the bandage.

“There. All better,” Efa said before turning back to the wreckage. Threnody’s arm still tingled as Efa walked off.

An irritated nerve, maybe. Or some residual holy magic.

“And don’t forget,” Efa called out. “You’re carrying the loot!”

That post about Karlach crying over eating proper food again

Alright but what do you get she totally overdoes it early on? After all, refeeding syndrome is a very real problem. And so she does too much, too rich, too quick

Naturally, at least someone tries to say something to Karlach, but you try arguing and reasoning with the woman who, for the last decade, has not eaten food that doesn't taste like sand and sadness

So Efa takes over cooking the group's meals(shush Gale, you can help okay, but trust me on this). She sticks to plain things, easy things. Any fruit, she makes sure that Karlach has first pick. They keep the alcohol stashed, at least for now (though Shadowheart does find the wine easy enough).

It doesn't take too long for Karlach to realise what's going on though, not when they found some lush looking meats that aren't in that night's dinner. Or the night after's.

She's understandably annoyed. They didn't ask her about it, didn't tell her what they were doing. They just did it. And Efa can only apologise and explain her motives...and show her the state she got herself into when she first left Avernus.

That sates Karlach somewhat, though she makes it known that she's still annoyed. But she accepts Efa and Gale's help after, letting them introduce heartier foods over time and crying again when she sinks her teeth into a whole wheel of cheese for the first time in years (ignoring her companions' snide comments because who the fuck cares)
