ULTIMATE DANNY PHANTOM
SYDNEY POINDEXTER
Sydney Poindexter was an easy mark, growing up as a sickly and awkward kid to a non-traditional family in the 1950’s. He endured the full range of bullying, from lazy and tasteless jokes to serious physical assault. Sydney’s parents kept thorough documentation of his treatment at the hands of students, and the neglect of faculty, throughout his high school tenure. They eventually sued the school district in a landmark lawsuit that would set nationwide precedent for how academia prevented and responded to bullying. Sydney – the boy – would one day leave Casper High School. With his smarts and perseverance, and with some help from his parents’ connections and significant wealth, he became a lawyer and dedicated his life to the unending fight for civil rights.
But Sydney left something behind at Casper High. Years of torment at the hands of bullies made Sydney a neurotic, anxious wreck for all four years at the school. Living in this near constant state of psychic anguish left a four-year long echo in Zero Space, creating a distorted facsimile of the school in the realm beyond. And across those four years, the echo of Sydney Poindexter was continually imbued with memories and psychic terror of his Earthly counterpart. It is unusual for ghosts to be created in this fashion, and Poindexter is nothing if not an unusual ghost.
Many ghosts turn out like the Lunch Lady – broken husks of their human selves, confused, and only capable of feeling and acting upon the strongest emotion felt at the moment of their progenitor’s death. A constant stream of psychic projections across the veil imbued Sydney’s echo with a stable consciousness, essentially creating a clone of himself in Zero Space. Poindexter lived as close to a charmed life as one could live in the Ghost Zone. The distorted reflection of the school served as his personal lair. Friends he made in his travels joined him in the halls of what he once considered a prison – now, a paradise.
Life was good for a time. But like the saying goes, all good things must come to an end…
Powers and Abilities
Empath: He spent so long examining his own feelings that he learned how to sense them in others. This ability doesn’t work very well across great distances or in crowds, but Popindexter is also good at reading faces when a target is out of range.
Anxiety Vampire: Poindexter was borne of strong emotions, chief among them being anxiety. When ectoplasm is in short supply, he can sustain himself on the psychic energy of human anxiety. While that might sound like a good thing at first glance, anxiety is a survival mechanism which alerts humans to potential threats. A total lack of anxiety makes humans prone to danger, and so Poindexter is careful to use it sparingly. He does not need to hold back against dangerous and monstrous ghosts in the Ghost Zone, and uses it to pacify would-be attackers.
Black and White Colouration: Poindexter has no idea why he looks like this. Some people think its because television sets still largely broadcast in black and white, but that theory doesn't really hold water because full color broadcasting began during Sydney's high school years during the 1950's. And even then, like, he isn't a special television ghost, he's the ghost of a regular guy. Everyone in the 1950's saw the world in color. Stranger still, the ghost-version of Casper High is also rendered in black and white. But any ghost or object that enters from the outside retains its regular colouration. The first time Poindexter met Walker he thought maybe there was another ghost like him, but it turns out Walker just has grey skin and wears black and white by choice. Yikes. Poindexter isn't exactly a fashion icon, but still. Poindexter has never met another ghost like him and, by all accounts, he is the only one of his kind. While he doesn't often talk about it, it confuses and infuriates him. Poindexter can use this trait to blend in with zebras maybe.
---
One of the ghosts Poindexter befriended was the un/lucky Johnny 13. Poindexter came from a less exciting era than Johnny 13, and the latter’s stunts amazed the former to no end. Maybe it was Johnny 13’s whirlwind romance with Kitty that made Poindexter realize he was missing a romance of his own. And so, one fateful day, Poindexter set out on a personal journey of discovery that would have made for a solid C+ indie movie in search of love. His journey was upended in a comedy of errors that saw him enslaved by the psychopathic Frederick Isaak Showenhower and forced to do battle against Danny Phantom. Ironically, this turn of events worked out in his favor.
After all, how else would he have met Lydia?
