Lady Day Protection Ritual
I used my spring equinox eggs in one last ritual on Lady Day/Zvěstováni Panny Marie and then it was time to use them in a recipe before they went bad.
I put the shells in a ziploc bag and then crushed them as much as I could. In Granny Hazel’s tea cup I combined them with a little St. Agatha salt and a little Annunciation salt.
I used the tea cup in this ritual for two reasons. One to have Granny Hazel present to aid me and second because of the pattern within the cup. The pattern is Homer Laughlin’s “Ferndale”—if you look closely some of the leaves are actually ferns, which are associated with Mary, especially in the French tradition (Granny Hazel was half québécois). The predominant flower is the rose which, of course, is also associated with Mary. The pale blue flowers, besides being an appropriate Marian color, reminded me of periwinkle with the five blue petals and yellow center—periwinkle is also one of Mary’s symbols.
I took the mixture outside and wearing Granny Lorraine’s rosary for a physical reminder of her presence, walked around the house sprinkling it. I stopped at each corner and recited a Hail Mary before returning to the house to make our Lady Day waffles.
Note: I did check and onion dyed egg shells aren’t only safe for animals, but the calcium is good for them.
