A fragment of a medieval thurible found in Råde earlier this year nearby a church built in 1185. We assume that it was deposited or disposed of in or around the years of the protestant reformation, which found its way to Norway in 1536-1537. During the reign of Christian III, the estates and wealth of the church was confiscated by the crown, and everything else reeking of catholisism was destroyed. Whether the censer was buried by catholics or smashed by zealous iconoclasts we do not know, but we feel fairly certain that it was made by the same hand as this thurible from the nearby Eidsberg Church.
