Mechelen Returns to Spanish Rule

On July 21, 1579, the Flemish city of Mechelen (Malines) reconciled with the Spanish crown during the Dutch Revolt, bringing it into the orbit of Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma. The city’s decision came as Parma successfully regained influence in the southern Netherlands through a combination of military pressure and political negotiation.

Mechelen’s shift reflected the growing religious and political divisions within the Low Countries. While many northern provinces continued their struggle against Spanish rule through the Union of Utrecht, several Catholic southern regions moved toward reconciliation with Philip II of Spain through the Union of Arras.

The city’s allegiance would remain contested during the following years of war, but the event marked another step in Parma’s campaign to restore Habsburg authority in the Netherlands.

Battle of Jemmingen: A Crushing Defeat for the Dutch Rebels

The Battle of Jemmingen was fought on July 21, 1568, during the opening stages of the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule. The battle took place near Jemmingen (modern Jemgum in Germany) between the Spanish army commanded by Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba and the rebel forces led by Louis of Nassau.

The rebel army, supporting the cause of William I of Orange, attempted to challenge Spanish authority in the Netherlands. However, Alba’s experienced troops, disciplined tactics, and superior organization overwhelmed the rebels. The battle ended in a decisive Spanish victory, with many rebel soldiers killed or captured.

The defeat at Jemmingen was a major setback for the early Dutch resistance. Although the Spanish victory temporarily strengthened Alba’s control, it did not end opposition to Spanish rule. The Dutch Revolt would continue for decades, eventually leading to the independence of the Dutch Republic.

The Siege of Oudewater: Gilles de Berlaymont’s Victory in the Dutch Revolt

On July 19, 1575, Spanish royalist commander Gilles de Berlaymont led his forces in the siege of Oudewater during the Dutch Revolt. The town, located in Holland, had joined the rebellion against Spanish rule and was defended by Protestant rebels determined to resist the advance of the royalist army.

Battle of Saint-Ghislain: Spain Defeats Genlis’ Mercenary Army

On July 19, 1572, the Battle of Saint-Ghislain took place during the early years of the Dutch Revolt, as Spanish forces confronted a Protestant relief army led by the French nobleman Jean de Hangest, Seigneur de Genlis. The battle was part of the wider struggle between the Spanish Habsburg government and rebels seeking independence in the Low Countries.

Genlis’ army, composed largely of French Huguenot and German mercenaries, had entered the Spanish Netherlands to support the rebellion against Spanish rule. However, the force was intercepted by the Spanish army commanded by Don Fadrique Álvarez de Toledo, son of the Duke of Alba. The Spanish troops launched a decisive attack near Saint-Ghislain in present-day Belgium, overwhelming Genlis’ forces.

The defeat was a major setback for the rebels, with many soldiers killed or captured, including Genlis himself. The victory strengthened Spanish control in the region and demonstrated the effectiveness of the experienced Spanish military during the opening phase of the Eighty Years’ War.

The Fall of Haarlem: A Brutal Chapter in the Eighty Years’ War

After seven months of fierce fighting, the Siege of Haarlem came to an end on July 13, 1573, when the Dutch city surrendered to Spanish forces during the Eighty Years’ War. The siege had become one of the most costly and brutal confrontations of the conflict, as the defenders of Haarlem resisted the powerful army of King Philip II of Spain.

On July 5, 1601, Spanish forces led by Archduke Albert VII of Austria kicked off a massive siege of the port city of Ostend in Flanders. It wasn’t a small operation either—around 12,000 Spanish troops backed by 50 siege guns came up against a Dutch garrison of fewer than 2,000 men.

Even though they were heavily outnumbered, the Dutch defenders turned Ostend into a tough, well-fortified stronghold. The Spanish tried everything—constant bombardment, digging trenches, and repeated assaults—but the defenders just kept holding out. What was supposed to be a quick victory turned into a grinding, brutal siege that would drag on for years.

Battle of Nieuwpoort: Anglo-Dutch Victory on the Flemish Coast

On July 2, 1600, during the Eighty Years’ War, the Anglo-Dutch forces under the command of Maurice of Nassau achieved a significant battlefield victory at the Battle of Nieuwpoort. Acting in coordination with English allies, Maurice led a bold campaign into the Spanish-controlled Spanish Netherlands, aiming to strike at coastal strongholds and disrupt enemy operations.

Opposing him was the experienced Spanish commander Albert VII, Archduke of Austria, whose forces initially held strong defensive positions. However, despite early Spanish advantages and fierce fighting, the Anglo-Dutch army managed to regroup and launch a decisive counterattack that forced a Spanish withdrawal. The victory boosted Dutch morale and demonstrated the growing effectiveness of the emerging Dutch military system.

Although the broader strategic gains of the campaign were limited, the Battle of Nieuwpoort became a symbol of Dutch resilience and military modernization during their struggle for independence from Spain.

The Martyrs of Alkmaar: A Tragic Chapter of the Dutch Revolt

On 24 June 1572, during the violent religious conflicts of the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule, five Catholic clerics from Alkmaar became victims of the struggle between competing religious movements in the Low Countries. Known as the Martyrs of Alkmaar (Martelaren van Alkmaar), these secular and religious clergy members were captured and executed in the town of Enkhuizen by militant Calvinist forces.

Their deaths occurred during the early stages of the Eighty Years’ War, a long conflict that would eventually lead to Dutch independence from the Spanish Empire. The executions were carried out under the authority of Calvinist leader Diederik Sonoy, reflecting the intense religious and political divisions that shaped 16th-century Europe.

The Martyrs of Alkmaar remain a symbol of the suffering endured by communities caught between rival faiths, political ambitions, and the upheavals of the Reformation era.
