The title of Polke's "Laterna Magica" series is a reference to 17th century optical devices used to project images. "Eine Winterreise" includes some excellent examples of Polke's "Magic Lantern" series-- works which he created by painting on both sides of stretched, translucent fabrics. The works seem to allude to Polke's experience working in a stained glass factory as a teenager and also the stained glass windows that he created for the Grossmunster cathedral in Zurich just before his death in 2010.
