El Sur by Jorge Luis Borges
"The South" - English translation by W. S. Merwin.
Borges’s “The South” (“El Sur”) transforms a landscape into a metaphysical homeland. The South is less a geographical region than an imagined realm of ancestry, courage, memory, and death, a place where the poet feels history waiting beneath the dust and open sky. Borges writes with characteristic restraint, allowing mirrors, shadows, old courtyards, and the vast pampas to carry emotional weight without overt confession. The poem’s deepest tension lies between belonging and distance: the South feels intimately his, yet remains partly inaccessible, inherited through books, family legends, and dreams. This gives the poem its haunting power. Borges approaches the landscape as though it were both a lost past and a future destiny, a final territory where the self may dissolve into myth.
You can discover more of my decade long study, analysis and writings on Borges here in the culmination of my art & literature residency in Buenos Aires.
Literary homage becomes metaphysical adventure. Occult history becomes personal revelation. Madeira becomes more than landscape: it becomes a mirror, a threshold, and an island of hidden correspondences.
Pessoa's Dreams is a Borgesian fantasia on the divided self: a book about masks, memory, authorship, solitude, and the strange consolation of becoming many.
Employing the literary short story tradition of Argentine poet Jorge Luis Borges, Simon Victor weaves a spellbinding narrative of occult history and magical realism into a thought provoking collection of interconnected metaphysical chronicles.
Pessoa’s Dreams is Simon Victor's homage to the iconic mystic and Portuguese author Fernando Pessoa.
