Elayna Lopez is one of those irradiant girls who dances her way through life---- literally. Residing in New York by way of Washington, D.C., the 23-year-old sprightly globetrotter, known to many as E-Money, can be seen on stage from London to Paris with none other than cheeky rapper, Azealia Banks, and dance partner, Matthew Pasterisa. What is your art background?
I was pretty much born to dance thanks to my mother and my dad. I studied ballet, jazz, and tap at the age of two. When I turned 18, I studied under the Dance Theatre of Harlem and Alvin Ailey.
How did you become a dancer for Azealia Banks?
We met at the first party I ever went to in NYC since moving there. She was performing underage at a 21+ party, slaying it! I was 18-years-old, and had snuck in the venue during soundcheck before the bouncers got there. I was dancing at that party the whole night! Then years later, she contacted me asking if I wanted to tour with her and the rest is history!
Are you in charge of your creating your choreography?
We mainly perform Hip-Hop style and voguing. I just recently learned these styles a couple years ago. I may come up with moves here or there, but my talented stage partner, Matthew Pasterisa, comes up with fabulous choreography. I'm shy with Hip-Hop choreography, so I'm trying to incorporate my dance background with these new styles that I'm still learning.
How do you prepare for each performance?
I like to have a happy spirit, save energy, stay hydrated, stretch, and go over the choreography with Matt.
What are you up to when you're not on tour?
I hang out with friends, rest a lot, and spend quality time with my boyfriend and puppy as much as I can.
Is it ever surreal traveling around the world?
At first it was. It was shocking because it was too good to be true. Now, I see that this is what I've been training for. It was meant to happen for me and I'm so thankful.
I know you're a pizza lover, but what's the best meal off the menu in Manila?
[Laughs.] I love pizza so much but my favorite Filipino food would have to be Pandit!
What inspires you as a woman?
The fact that women can do things just as good as any man could. I'm all about being a powerhouse
What does it take to be successful in this world?
Complete drive and motivation. You cannot give up if one thing isn't working out for you. Make it work.
