the queen and gallica
here's a case of a translation issue where the translation would not be technically wrong in a vacuum, but still fails to convey important information due to not considering the context of the rest of the game in translation - the queen's explanation of her fate, during the last scene with hythlodaeus in akademeia:
the official translation isn't exactly "incorrect" looking at the dialog by itself - "among the fairies" would be a reasonable translation of 妖精の中で if this scene existed in isolation, but the scene doesn't exist in isolation!
aside from the implications of her connection to gallica prior to this, the memorandum, even in english, makes much clearer what the queen actually did and what she's explaining here: she didn't simply exist "among the fairies", her spirit was inside gallica. the ambiguity in translating 妖精の中で is completely resolved by this existing to clarify the line's intent.
but while the original line could still potentially be unclear to a japanese player who didn't pick up on the earlier implications of the voice speaking through gallica, the english translation ends up actively obfuscating the information communicated here by translating it as if this context doesn't exist. there is a direct answer to whether 妖精の中で was meant to mean "among fairies" or "within a single fairy", but, one way or another, this was not communicated between the translator working on this scene and the translator working on the memorandums, and the official translation chose to clarify in the opposite direction.
as a result, going back and reading this memorandum in NG+ is the only way an english player could find out that the queen's spirit has been possessing gallica, because the scene where she explains it appears to say something totally different!
