hi! could you rec me some non-american films, please? I'm not much of a movie person, so anything you throw at me helps (and will probably be new to me!). The general idea is basically anything with dark and interesting themes? while avoiding anything too depressing? 👉🏼👈🏼🥺
my knowledge of films is also very limited, so i’m atting @knifeplusheart and also @marypickfords because they both know far more about films than me. also these are just off the top of my head; I’ll probably think of more later!
a few directors of the top of my head:
Park Chan-Wook (The Handmaiden and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance)Werner Herzog (Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht)Aleksandr Sokurov (Faust)Lee Chang-dong (Burning)Jean Rollin (Fascination)Ingmar Bergman (Persona)Ali Abbassi (Shelley and Border)Veronika Franz (Goodnight Mommy)Andrzej Żuławski (The Third Part of the Night and Possession)Derek Jarman (Sebastian and Caravaggio)everything Andrei Tarkovsky ever did
specific films:
A Field Guide to Evil (2018) dir. multiple peopleGhost Stories (2017) dir. by Andy Nyman & Jeremy Dyson
