At the beginning of Elder Hale’s October 2014 General Conference talk, “To Know Our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ,” he says, “I testify.” I love to hear the words, “I testify,” because they are usually followed by a principle and a promise. He says, “I testify that when we do what is necessary to know Them and know Their love for one another, we will obtain “the greatest of all the gifts of God” -- even eternal life. For ‘this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.’”
So it is necessary to know Them and their love for one another. If we know them we will have “the greatest of all the gifts of God” -- even eternal life.”
“How can this gift be ours?” and how can we feel Their love for one another? Elder Hales answers this question, “It comes through a matter of personal revelation.”
Elder Hales asks us this very important question, “Do you remember the first time you knew there was a God and could feel His love?” This question was a hard one for me to answer because I have grown up in the Church I am not sure when the first time I felt his love was. But the more I thought about it, the more I had a specific memory come to my mind. For as long as I can remember, my parents have had family scriptures in the morning. I remember one early morning when I was very young, probably about seven years old. My dad had gotten me out of bed for family scriptures. I was wrapped up in a blanket on the living room floor, and I looked around and saw my sister, Erin, also wrapped in a blanket laying on the floor, my sister, Brinn, with her cat doll curled up in her blanket, my brother Ty somewhere next to me snoring, my dad was sitting on the floor with Sara asleep in his lap, as he read from the scriptures, and my mom in her rocking chair with little Jace. To me it seemed stupid, none of us wanted to be there except my parents. I pouted to myself, “This is dumb. Neither of my parents seems to care that we are all pretending not to be asleep while we are sleeping! If we are going to be sleeping anyway, why didn’t they just let us stay in bed?” I remember closing my eyes for a moment. When I reopened them, I saw the room differently. Everyone was still in the same spots, but the room felt brighter and I felt an ovewhelming love for my family. I knew that God loved them and me. The scene no longer seemed dumb to me. In fact, it now seemed beautiful and full of love, and because of that love it was perfect. I think one of the reasons this moment in time stands out to me is because I went from a negative outlook, and then received personal revelation of God’s love for me and my family.
In his talk, Elder Hales said, “My own testimony grew as I learned about Heavenly Father and the Savior from the teachings and testimony of my parents, teachers, the scriptures -- which I read diligently -- and especially the Holy Ghost. As I exercised faith and obeyed the commandments, the Holy Ghost testified that what I was learning was true. This is how I came to know for myself.” (italics added)
After we feel his witness to us, we cannot stop there, we have to continue receiving personal revelation continuing to grow spiritually. By doing what Elder Hales asks us: learn about Heavenly Father and the Savior, through teachers, the scriptures (study), and especially the Holy Ghost, as we will exercise faith and obey the commandments, the Holy Ghost testifies that what we are learning is true.
Elder Hales tells us, “In this process, seeking for personal revelation is a key. Nephi invites each of us to ‘feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do.’”
It is important for us to keep moving forward in this life. All of us have the opportunity to have the Holy Ghost with us always. He is there to help us through this life; he will also help us grow closer to our Heavenly Father and his son, Jesus Christ.
Elder Hales received the gift of the Holy Ghost when he was eight and his understanding of the gospel continued to grow. He said, “I also began to understand that God and Christ are literally a Father and a Son -- separate, distinct, individual beings who are wholly unified in Their purpose. ‘We love [Them] because [They] first loved us.’” Elder Hales points out that in the scripture Heavenly Father addresses Jesus as “my Beloved Son,” “His only Begotten Son,” and “Son of the Highest.” Then also Jesus often spoke of his “Father”, and addressed his “Father” in prayer. He says, “Can we see a pattern in these scriptures that testifies of the Father and the Son as distinct individuals and beings? How then, are They one? Not because They are the same person, but because They are unified in purpose, equally dedicated to ‘bring[ing] to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.’”
This is Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ’s unifying goal -- they want all of us to return to live with them. Because this is Their goal, we need to make it our goal. And when we do, Heavenly Father will provide us with all the tools we need to gain eternal life. This is why I have decided to serve a mission. I want to be an instrument in His hands in helping others come to the knowledge and truth of this eternal joy of this gospel.
When we look at the scriptures, we can see how Heavenly father has introduced Jesus Christ as his Son. Elder Hales says, “With this in mind, wea are not surprised that the Restoration of the gospel began with the appearance of not one, but two glorified beings. Of his First Vision, the Prophet Joseph Smith testified: ‘One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other -- This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!’ The young prophet, who went into the grove to find out which church he should join, wnet with faith unwavering and came out with the knowledge and a witness of the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom God had sent. Joseph, like the prophets before him, was then to be an instrument for restoring to the world the knowledge that leads to eternal life.”
If you do not know if God loves you, ask Him.
If you do not know if this is His gospel, Find out! Ask him.
Go to Him in faith in a quiet corner and ask Him.
Elder Hales says, “As you seek a personal witness -- your personal revelation -- you will discover that Heavenly Father has provided a special way for you to know the truth for yourself: through the third member of the Godhead, a personage of spirit we know as the Holy Ghost.”
This is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jesus Christ is at the head. Elder Hales concludes, “Brothers and sisters, I testify that our Heavenly Father wants us to seek this knowledge now. The words of the prophet Helaman cry from the dust: ‘Remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation..., a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.’ Indeed, we will not fail.”
I bear my testimony that these things are true. Test them for yourselves.
In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
