A Letter to Society (Respectfully, No)

Dearest Enraged Chaos Goblin (reader),

As an eldest daughter, there is nothing more I would like to do than scream at the top of my lungs from the highest peak in the world, smash a million and one porcelain plates on a tar road late at night, cry my eyes out until sleep finally takes me, or slap some sense into the stupid people who piss me off. However, society dictates that true women are calm, collected, and poised, so that is what I have tried to be.

From a young age, I’ve been told, “Oh, you’re so mature for your age,” or “Oh, you’re such a mother hen.” And although some of those traits are mine alone, most of them were trauma-induced coping mechanisms that overrode my personality and forced me to grow up faster than I should have.

I turn 22 in July, and fun fact: it’s taken me this long to finally accept that I don’t have to do what makes others happy. I’m allowed to put myself first without feeling like a bad person. I’m allowed to be whimsical. I’m allowed to cry. I’m allowed to put those who hurt me in their places. And I’m allowed to be absolutely, incredibly fucking happy.

And guess what? So are you.

So, as every well-known reel once said: “Fuck you, society.”
