We now deem a politician successful only if a whole sickly iconography is created around them; memes, gifs, tee-shirts, children’s books. But we don’t have to love our politicians. In fact, it’s dangerous to do so, since it either blinds us to their flaws or leads to disappointment and rancour. And if you really love your candidate, there’s a good chance someone else will really hate them. Voters like Biden just enough, and they think he will do a decent enough job, and that’s enough.

It’s election night here (again), so spouse is currently running mental statistics, with the added complexity of pandemic absentee voting thrown in.

I do this kind of crap professionally, but elections are entirely his domain. I’m drinking rum drinks, chowing down on charcuterie, and watching below deck while he spouts hypotheticals.

I am so incredibly proud of all my friends who have worked on these campaigns, who have run for office, and who have been elected. And I am so grateful to not be on a campaign this cycle!

I am not American and I live opposite to America. A couple days back, I had a debate with a classmate as to why he shouldn’t support Trump. I think I won. But if he still supports him, I will simply never talk to him.

On election night 2004, I wrapped up working at the polls and headed to my campus young Democrats party to watch results roll in.

On election night 2008, I wrapped up working at the polls and headed to the young democrats party downtown.

On election night 2012, I was sitting at my new husband’s bedside, 2 days post kidney transplant.

On election night 2016, I was pregnant, nauseated, and fighting off a sinus infection, so I went to bed early and focused on growing a human.

On election night 2020, we have no internet (thanks tropical storm zeta...), so we’re streaming cnn through the hubby’s phone and drinking.

I feel incredibly old.

BUT WHY THO?

We shouldn’t have to ... if voting is so vital to this “Democracy” then voters should NOT have to jump through hoops to compensate for a broken system.
