UM Track By Track : : Electric Sol -‘Accept Me’ EP
Alternative Pop/Dance Act Electric Sol released their EP ‘Accept Me’ today! The EP was produced by Grammy-nominated Dapo Torimiro and catalogs the positivity of love, friendship and relationships.
Electric Sol was kind enough to write a Track by Track for the EP which you can read below!
Accept Me
I wanted to start with this track because the killer bassline attracts attention and the smooth vibe eases people into everything the EP has to offer. In a subliminal way, I wanted to tell people that I was taking music more seriously now: Accept me as an artist, because I’m here to stay.
I wrote the lyrics after thinking about all the people I know who’ve had tough relationships with their parents. The song comes from the perspective of someone who’s moved beyond the pain. It’s written from a place of strength. But it’s not just about parents. It’s about any relationship with a know-it-all or naysayer trying to keep you down, which can even be ourselves. My own self-critic can be pretty loud sometimes, and I do my best to acknowledge the opinion without getting rattled.
One of the risks I took on the song was to change the voice. The verses come from the authority figure’s point of view and the choruses are the response to that. I’ve read so many lyric writing books that say don’t change the voice in a song because it’ll confuse people, but Electric Sol fans are smart!
Together
Like all the songs on the EP, Together was written during daily walks I’ve been taking since everything shut down. My wife was having a by-appointment-only art show called here/now at a gallery in Phoenix, so that phrase was buzzing around my head a lot. When the line “All that really matters is the here and now” came to me, everything else fell into place.
The song is about finding someone who you’re meant to be with, both when you’re enjoying lovey-dovey, positive stuff or when you feel completely vulnerable and need to be supported no matter what.
I Appreciate You
This is probably our riskiest track because it’s kind of goofy, but we’re a quirky bunch of music nerds so I’m hoping we can get away with it. It’s a love song focused on friendship. The characters may or may not have a romantic relationship, but the song is clearly focused on showing appreciation for someone who always has your back and keeps you grounded.
I think the “Thank you” section at the end is something that could catch on, or maybe people will hate it. I see it as a way to express deep feelings of appreciation in a lighthearted way. I’m not a very emotional person. I tend to joke around a lot because being serious makes me uncomfortable most of the time. This can be, and often is misinterpreted, but the people who know me well understand that it’s often the best I can do and that I don’t mean to come off in a flippant way. I could die happy if people share that “Thank you” section when they want to show their appreciation to someone for something, from taking out the trash to being supportive when something really heavy goes down.
I Think I’m Falling
This was the first track we recorded for the EP, back in April. I shared the lyrics, some scratch vocals, and a couple reference tracks with our incredible producer, Dapo Torimiro, and when I got his first pass I knew the whole EP was going to be something special. At 126 bpm, this song is a real dance jam, and I hope it gets people moving.
The theme of the song is finding love when you least expect it, or when you think it’s never going to happen to you, which I’m finding out is a pretty universal human experience. I hope people take some comfort from the song and I hope that everyone can eventually experience the thrill that comes from meeting someone you can share some intensity with.
I Think I’m Falling [Radio Edit]
This is just a shorter version of “I Think I’m Falling”, because five minutes is a lot to ask people for these days!
So that’s about it. Thank you so much for joining me on this track-by-track journey. I hope that knowing a little bit about the music makes listening to it even more of a happy, positive experience. Please check out the EP and get up and dance for about 20 minutes!
