he wanted to pick something similar to his sister’s!!!! until i iron out the nitty gritty details, for now, dipper is out to his parents, even if they aren’t the most supportive bunch, so they probably also helped him pick a name. to paraphrase the wiki, their parents wanted to pick archaic names for them so he wanted to please them if he could in that
even if it, as far as his parents go, was a little for their sake, it was definitely what he wanted in having something similar to mabel’s name. it took a little while & he jokes about it sounding like an old man’s name—which is one of the reasons he prefers to introduce himself as dipper—but he really does love it
