he knows the girl is telling the truth. but 9S doesn’t want to believe it. he grips cruel oath between his hands, his fingers slowly gripping over every bit of the handle. UNIT 9S charges forth, letting out a primal yell--how HUMAN-PASSING it sounds, too!--before he throws cruel oath, unaware of how STUPID STUPID STUPID this plan of his is. there’s nothing he can do.

he’s ACCUSING her, and while he has every right to, it hurts more than any damage she has taken from all her hard battles. virtuous contract remains loosely held in the android’s hand as she turns her head to the side. she hates seeing 9S back away from her like this as if she is some sort of threat. oh, but she is. 2E is a predator.

“ you can’t– “ she’s shocked at how much her voice wavers. 2B swallows and tries again: “ you can’t keep snooping around where you aren’t meant to. if you just… “ again, her voice dies. when she was given this mission, she never would have imagined it would be this hard. IT ALWAYS ENDS LIKE THIS. “ i wouldn’t have to do this if you JUST DIDN’T LOOK. “

“ WHAT’S THE TRUTH, 2B? ” his voice is soft, sotto voce, because he’s doing his best to seem like he has some semblance of control over this situation. he doesn’t, not in the slightest, but it doesn’t stop 9S from trying. he watches 2B like prey watches a predator too close to home--wary, frightened, && READY TO DO THE WORST TO STAY SAFE.

he knows he stands no chance against 2B. not unless he can hack her significantly quicker than she can put virtuous contract through his black box. HE DOUBTS HE CAN DO THAT. not unless he puts significant distance between the two of them.

pascal asked a favour of him. 9S needed to help find a missing android--who had gone after another android. assuming these were damaged units--probably resistance deserters--9S had agreed to help pascal without thinking about it; EVERYBODY NEEDED HELP, from time to time.

that was his train of thought, up until he heard pod 153 say, “ BLACK BOX SIGNAL DETECTED. signal belongs to rogue unit 5S, wanted for deserting YoRHa. ”

liar. liar, liar-- even now, though 9S has no reason to defend humanity, though he knows so much of the truth, that this shouldn’t surprise him--he shouldn’t deny it with every fibre of his being. but he does. but he does, he does--HE CAN’T BELIEVE IN THIS.

“ LIAR!! ” he’s screaming again. he’s done so much screaming these past few days that it doesn’t have the same emphasis anymore--his voice is hoarse, angry, but weak, && 9S hates it. he hates so much that he doesn’t know what to do with himself anymore.
