"How did this happen?" Amy asked, idly folding her napkin into a pinwheel. Shaking it loose, she grabbed Tails' water and wiped leftover chili off the glass.
"Not sure." Sonic shrugged, "We split up and when we met up, he was like this." He thumbed over to Tails, who was cheerfully pouring salt into Sonic's water.
Grimacing, Amy pulled her lemonade closer.
"Do you think it was Eggman?"
Tails looked up at the name, still shaking the salt.
Sonic tapped his foot idly, "Maybe."
He didn't sound convinced.
In a single motion, he looked down at his communicator, rolled to his feet, and ruffled Tails' bangs.
"I'm gonna grab another dog." He announced and was gone in a blink.
Amy looked at Tails, who had followed the trail and was staring at the still-swinging doors.
"He'll be back in a minute," Amy soothed, "You know how he is."
Tails nodded and turned back to Sonic’s drink and Amy gave a sigh of relief as he finally put the salt down. Only to immediately wince as he then ripped open half-a-dozen sugar packets and dumped them in.
Amy looked down at her phone, no message from Sonic.
Glancing up, Tails was using Sonic’s straw to stir the mixture. His little face furrowed and he added in another sugar packet.
At least he was having fun.
There was a blur out of the corner of her eye and Amy looked up; Tails was waving at her. Sonic’s drink was foggy and the ice was all but melted. Judging by the pile, Tails had either gotten bored or ran out of sugar.
She waved back, but Tails’ huffed. Frowning, the kit waved again, but faster. Amy hid her grin and waved back just as fast.
Tails' brow furrowed and his bemusement turned to determination. Squirming to his feet, he leaned forward and put his arms on the table.
"Tails!" Amy scolded, "We don't get on tables! We're civilized creatures and that's very rude."
He looked at her, but didn't get down. Amy cleared her throat and Tails’ frown twitched. His eyes narrowed and he continued to climb onto the table.
Amy's jaw dropped. Tails never acted like this!
A sudden gust snapped her out of her shock and she looked at Sonic. He was sitting in his chair bouncing his leg, already impatient, his chilidog long gone.
She wasn't fast enough to grab him before Tails frantically started waving again. Instantly, Sonic looked at his brother. He had most of his weight, both arms, and a knee on the table. Sonic didn’t seem to care about Tails’ lack of manners, but the fox pulled himself off the table anyway. Standing on his chair, Tails pointed at Amy.
Amy raised her hand to explain herself, and maybe Sonic did care about his brother’s lack of decorum but- Sonic casually leaned over over and grabbed the glass of water and handed it to the kit. Tails carefully took the water with both hands and plopped on the chair.
He lapped at the water for a moment before frowning. Curling his knees around the glass, he reached over and grabbed a straw. He shoved it in his drink, and shifted, still using his knees as support. Glass stable, Tails’ held his cup with both hands and happily sipped his water, staring at Sonic with big eyes -and Amy belatedly realized that she probably should’ve ordered a kid’s cup instead.
Her words died in her mouth and her arm dropped, only to shoot up as Sonic took a swig of his own water. His eyes lit up and he tilted his head back and chugged it. Smacking his lips together, he met Tails' grin and shot him a thumbs up.
Caught between revulsion and affection, Amy just sipped her own drink and laughed.
