alan jay lerner i want to shake you by your collar and scream at the top of my lungs because somehow despite my deep and abiding love for this musical i did not understand until harry hadden-paton's delivery of this line and the actual script in front of my eyes that it's. a CALL AND RESPONSE!!!!

for a million years i thought: my fair lady is only half of the story: eliza's half. the unseen second half, wherein higgins undergoes his own transformation into a human, follows the final curtain. and i have grieved and raged against shaw for not understanding his own gem of a work well enough to give us the full story.
BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! alan jay lerner understood!!!!! alan jay lerner was married eight times without repeating any wives and from this we can infer that the man knew something about falling in love. he read between all of shaw's lines and confidently translated all that chaotic pining subtext as one who spoke it fluently. he knew pygmalion was a love story. so when he wrote my fair lady he wrote a love story. ALAN if only i could travel back to 1955 to strangle-hug you
and harry hadden-paton, if you're ever within arm's reach that is EXACTLY what i will do to you!!! and here's why! behold professor henry higgins, very much in love and very determined not to admit it to anyone including himself, falling APART during 'accustomed to her face', sitting in his little chair like what is he supposed to do now?? CONTINUE LIVING????? HOW???? and we all know what's going to happen next and we all know the exact tone and tenor of rex's smug self-congratulatory delivery of the final line. we've seen the spoilers for the broadway revival and we all know the surprise is how eliza's half of the story concludes. not HIGGINS'. that's old news! to which hh-p TAKES A SLEDGHAMMER. behold *me*, utterly LEVELED by his gasped delivery of "where the devil are my slippers?" oh MY SUN AND STARS!!!! like !!!!!!!!!!! she says "i washed my face and hands before i come i did" stepping back into HER old persona!!!! and he realizes OH he has to play a part!!!! to get them onto even footing!!!! with both of them recognizing that they are NOT those people anymore so that they can reconcile!!!!
and -- she hears it! from this man who knows the words for everything except this! SHE CALLS; HE RESPONDS; 'SHE UNDERSTANDS' ahhhh!!!! I LOVE I ADORE I AM BESOTTED. REX HARRISON WHO??? there is no unseen half HE WAS BECOMING A HUMAN THE WHOLE TIME AND THE MUSICAL ENDS WITH HIS COMPLETED TRANSFORMATION i am SO keyed up about this give hh-p a tony for putting my entire world on a slant!!!! alan jay lerner deserves a medal!!!!
