We’re willing to make a bet this Halloween that nobody trick or treats quite like Rhoda Penmark, the central figure at the heart of the 1954 novel and play and iconic 1956 film The Bad Seed. One of the biggest hits of year for Warner Bros., this cult classic helped to establish the now time-honored horror genre of the pint-sized psychopath and counts filmmaker John Waters among its fans.

This October, 1956 cover of Philco News (Vol. 14, No. 6) features the star of both the play and the film, Patty McCormack. After originating the role of Rhoda, McCormack went on to work in projects like The Ropers, The Sopranos, Frost/Nixon, The Master, and many other film and television roles. Recently, she was brought on to a 2018 television remake of The Bad Seed, playing a cameo role as child psychiatrist.
