But consider this: If there was really vote shaving involved in the 2016 National and Local Elections as the camp of Bongbong Marcos claimed - what if it’s just people from his camp who did the vote shaving by posing as Liberal Party supporters and doing the vote shaving so that LP automatically gets blamed for the act therefore contributing more to “the Marcoses are still better” narrative but really, it’s just Bongbong Marcos supporters doing the vote shaving while posing as LP supporters so that they could get away with what they’re doing.

This was the result of the official count in the House of Representatives which showed her leading with 14,418,817, or just 263,473 votes apart from her closest rival Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. who got 14,155,344.

Congress sitting as the National Board of Canvassers finished tabulating the total number of 166 certificates of canvass around 7:18 p.m. on Friday.

Robredo was declared the winner after the canvassing, which incidentally was the 58th birthday of her late husband Jesse Robredo.

Jesse, the former interior secretary, died in a plane crash in 2012 due to engine failure. The sympathy for her husband buoyed the widow Leni to win the congressional district of Camarines Sur in the 2013 midterm elections, toppling the Villafuerte political clan.

Although Congresswoman Robredo initially wanted to run for senator in the May 9 national polls, she was convinced to be the running mate of Manuel “Mar” Roxas when the administration’s first choice Grace Poe opted to run for president.

Robredo started off the lowest in the voters’ preference polls until she got in a statistical tie with frontrunner Marcos before the elections.

Robredo won the vice presidency buoyed by her votes from her bailiwicks in Bicol, which stood out against the “Solid North” votes for Marcos.

Marcos had decried massive cheating and automated fraud that shaved his votes in favor of Robredo after a supposed change in command script in the transparency server that received the unofficial count. But the change was dismissed as a cosmetic change intended to correct the spelling of a candidate’s name.

Marcos trailed with 14,155,344 votes.

As expected, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte maintained his overwhelming lead with 16,601,997 votes in the official count. RAM

The Election Returns from our overseas voters in Canada have been counted by the Board of Canvassers and PDiggy won there with 15,643 votes. 

How disappointing. To think that Filipino Canadians for Good Governance called for Filipino-Canadians not to vote for Duterte and add in the fact that PM Justin Trudeau has close ties with the Filipino Canadians and then this happens - majority of the Filipinos in Canada who can vote in our elections chose to vote for this sick excuse of a leader who only:

cares about his hometown

thinks that Visayas and Mindanao (and most especially Mindanao) only exist for his convenience 

thinks that the only left leaning people in our country are those aligned with CPP-NPA-NDF when they do not represent the left leaning people - there’s still the Partidong Lakas ng Masa, People’s Reform Party and the Philippine Democratic Socialist Party to name a few.

thinks that human rights=more criminals

insults women (remember the rape joke he made), PWDs (he made a joke about a PWD he knows) and the LGBT+ (he called Mar Roxas gay as an insult)

Whoever these voters are, they seem selfish, while they get to live a comfortable life back in Canada with the Prime Minister there treating their community well - they decided that their home country should suffer. 

No, that’s not how you treat your home country as a member of our diaspora and this goes out not just to the Filipino diaspora in Canada who can still vote in the Philippine elections but to the Filipino diaspora of every country (because PDiggy won overall as President for the Overseas Absentee Voting). 

I was born in the Philippines and raised in the US for most of my life and when I finally hit the legal age to vote in the Philippines two years ago - I really saw to it that I would be able to vote in the absentee elections (since I’m a Filipino citizen by birth and I still remain one up to this day and I don’t think I’d ever give up my Filipino citizenship despite not living in the Philippines most of the time).

I won’t tell you who I voted for in the absentee voting this year but I can surely tell you that I made sure not to vote for someone who wants to fuck up the foreign relations between my home country and nations that my home country has close relations to (including the US where I live) and most importantly, I made sure not to vote for someone who’s just going to fuck up the lives of the people back in my home country ala Juan Peron. 

Before you say I’m unpatriotic for saying all these things, I am not. If I were unpatriotic, I could have let go of my Filipino Citizenship as soon as I turned 18 and I could have sat out of the Absentee voting if the former wasn’t the case and I could have outright denied to anyone I met that I am a Filipino - I did neither of these. I chose to keep my Filipino citizenship, I chose to vote in the absentee elections and I chose not to deny my heritage. Yes, I may have been raised in the US but it will not change the fact that I am born a Filipino and I am raised to love and appreciate my home country and its people even if I live far away from it. I still care for my home country.

As absentee voters, we should really shake off the logic of “it doesn’t really matter who becomes the next president of our home country because it won’t affect us directly anyway” because you know what, whoever becomes president back in our home country will affect our lives as members of the Filipino diaspora - especially the lives of those of us who still remain Filipino citizens despite living abroad for such a long time.
