Can I Still Call These Monster March? | Day 7 | Elemental(s)

it got away from me

The winter had come heavy and brutal. And it hadn't left. Your little village in the center of the island hadn't weathered the first year well. They hadn't weathered the second one at all. Now in the third year, they turned to drastic measures. 

You had hoped they would draw lots. Or choose someone that wasn't useful. Someone who didn't watch the children and chop the firewood and share their meager provisions with the elders. You hoped they would choose anything that gave you a chance to survive. But they chose the person that would be most pleasing to the elementals. Thick thighs and a round belly and hair that covered you like a warm blanket. Stony facial features and a tongue like a lick of fire. If it was an elemental of ice, it would gobble you up. If it was the volcano, it would swallow you whole. If it was the ocean you would drown in its icy currents. 

So they tied you to a stone altar in a cave deep in the side of the volcano. Snow drifted in from the entrance, covering you in your thin white robes. Lava bubbled below, the heat melting snow as it coated your eyelashes. And they left you alone.

Not entirely alone, you soon realized. The snow solidified, ice crystalized, and then a creature stood in the entrance to the cave. Watching you. Not a creature, not entirely. But not a man either. It’s ice and snow modeled shape had two legs and broad shoulders but it was larger than any man could be. Its hand the length of one of your legs, you realized as it stepped closer and pressed that hand against your body. 

The lava burbled - almost angrily unless you imagined it - below while the ice stroked across your thinly shrouded form. And then the lava erupted. A shower of water where lava touched ice drenched your robes into translucence and two figures loomed over you. A shape of lava and stone with curves where a woman might have them and the creature of ice and snow and broad chiseled lines stood on opposite sides of your altar. And you felt the heat and ice of their presence as they looked down at you, grating and grumbling noises replacing what would have been words. And then they reached for you.

And so it came, the first occasion to see if the bond between the Swordbearer and the Sword was strong enough. At the end of the dungeon, an elemental monster appeared. But how could they win, alone against fire and stone?
