We started to learn how to play the recorder in school, and I was ecstatic. We were learning how to make music with something other than our voices! In our prep period, we learned what notes were and how to read a rhythm. This was my first exposure to a music staff and how to read sheet music. Our music teacher taught us the fingerings for the recorder and which notes they made. It took a lot of memorization and practice to put together the notes and the rhythms in a way that sounded vaguely like music. We learned how to read and play music together.
