Y’know, if you could avoid getting EATEN by your evil babysitter, than shrinking and EXPLORING was a ton of fun! The time they had spent with children throughout the centuries was kept to a minimum ;; it had been a millenium since Sambor had been a child, he had had no offspring of his own, and Las had little excuse to be around children otherwise. So perhaps they came off as a little HARSH, demanding, but they meant the best for the kid. There was no mistaking the foresight that told them the path ahead was a threat, and they could not let the youth carry on in that direction in good conscious.
