Sometimes, out of nowhere, I find myself remembering you. Not the big things, the little ones. Small details. Just tiny bits of you. And I miss them.

Many years ago when in a temple in Japan with mom 🇯🇵⛩, we drew lots and had our fortune told as is customary practice. Mine was summed up as "like an elephant trying to get to the waterfall, the journey is not easy but since the elephant is strong and steady eventually you shall reach your destination and find happiness". They say an eidetic memory is a gift; but a lot of the time, that statement just doesn’t ring true. A lot of the time, in Reid’s case, it’s a burden. A heavy, unwanted burden that he has to fight against every day. It’s not that he doesn’t like being able to recall specific details - he does, it’s useful in this job - but rather the memories that he wants to forget. Tobias Hankel is one of them.

He’s back in that chair again. Choose. There’s a gun pointed at him. The pain’s there again-- he’s being beaten, and then he’s on the floor and oh; oh he can’t breathe and all goes black. Something’s dragging him out of the darkness and he’s....where is he? It’s dark. It’s dark and his chest hurts and he’s struggling to catch his breath. There’s something holding him though so he’s struggling against that too, which in turn prevents him from catching it.

Kid. Tobias didn’t call him that. It was Sinner. SINNER. It’s Morgan. The name washes over him and he blinks. Once, twice -- three times to get his eyes to adjust. Morgan. As he comes to realise he’s not in the barn - he’s at Morgan’s house - and that he’s safe, Reid’s gulping, gasping breaths ease and his fighting stops. He’s safe. It’s not real.

“Sorry. I uh--- I was dreaming.”
