So for some reason since I’ve joined the Silm fandom I’ve gotten really into making both Quenya and Sindarin names. So here are a few of my favorite that I’ve made! If there are two names with a / between them, the first is Quenya and the second is Sindarin. If you want to know how these names were made, or how to make your own, feel free to send me an ask and I’ll do a post on it or something. These are all free to use, though credit is always appreciated.

Farincë: Little Hunter

Ikhino: THE Child (inspired by the joke that Celegorm would name his kid The Child.)

Cáladór: bright dawn, red sky in morning (inspired by the early quenya word kandóra of the same meaning. Could be interpreted as red dawn.)

Ruscúnë/Ruscúon: Fox-Crescent/Bow (made for an OC of mine.)

Laurinde/Inglóriel: Golden Heart.

Entulaurë: Return of Day. (Inspired by utúlie’n aurë.)

Arinele: Morning Star

Almariel/Alvariel: Blessed daughter (variant of Almiel, inspired by Almárëa.)

Vorinde: Enduring will (inde is a word for will, mind, and heart. So you can interpret this in different ways.)

Elórë/Eleriad: Rising Star (A variant of Eleriad is Elorthad. The word órë is also commonly associated with the rising of the sun so do with that information what you will.)

Elëar: Star-Sea/Sea star (this is one with a lot of cool variants.)

Tinuial: Starry Twilight (Sindarin. Tinnu as a name.)

Miruial: Gem of Twilight (Sindarin)

Hello Runaan! I'm making a startouched elf oc and just wanted to know, is Txar a good name for a female?

I'm not familiar with many Star Touch elf names, but I don't know of anyone using the name Txar, so it's all yours - or hers. It has a lovely ring to it.

The names of Caranthir’s daughters

I decided to make a post about the names of Caranthir and Tuilindien’s daughters in my Fëanorian marriages series so I can link back to it in my author’s notes.

Moriel Elerrína

father-name Moriel

morë ‘dark, black’ + -iel ‘daughter’

= 'daughter of the black-haired one' or 'black-haired daughter' –> because black-haired daughter of black-haired father (cf. Carnistir’s father-name Morifinwë)

mother-name Elerrína

elen ‘star’ + rína ‘crowned’

'crowned with stars', a name of Taniquetil –> because of her freckles

She chooses to be called Moriel among the Noldor, Elerrína among the Vanyar

Vaniel Líriwen

father-name Vaniel

either from vane/vanya ‘beautiful/fair-haired’ or from Vanya ‘one of the Vanyar’’ + iel ‘daughter’

= 'daughter of beautiful/fair-haired one', ‘daughter of Vanya’, 'beautiful daughter' –> because the daughter of a fair-haired, beautiful (in Carnistir’s opinion) Vanya mother

mother-name Líriwen

lírë ‘song’ + ‘wen’ maiden

= ‘song maiden' –> because she makes up her own songs ever since she is a baby, and finds great delight in music

She chooses to use Líriwen as her primary name.

So their father-names are a simple patronymic and matronymic – basically ‘daughter of Carnistir’, ‘daughter of Tuilindien’, by the way of descriptors of the parents in the names.

My Warden’s name is Myriani Surana, taken from a really crappy elven name generator because it was the best sounding thing on the list.

I was scrolling through Project Elvhen on AO3, and Myriani is an actual listed name, taken to mean “protected friend of Mythal.” This... is amazing.

I’m picturing Flemythal hearing her name and thinking “yes, you are a good one, here, take my daughter.”

I always thought the DnD elf concept of child names was super cool. Why don't more modern societies adopt that as a concept? Call your child whatever, and once they are an 'adult' let them choose their own adult name, leaving the child name an intimate nickname. It would be neato and encourage self-discovery, as well as lessen the parental sense that they will forever be the major defining influence on their child's identity.

150 words in: oh damn I need a name for this OC

I proceed to spend an hour looking for the perfect name for this character who’ll be mentioned in like two sentences

When I find it I can’t really get back into the flow

but still feel that that was time well spent

(I think this is the closest I’ll ever come to channelling Tolkien, lol)

Tolkien states that ‘The father-name of a daughter would [--] often be derived from the name of the mother’ (in Of Naming, LaCE, HoME XI) but do we actually know any such names?

Off the top of my head, I could only think of [what are possibly] counterexamples, daughters’ names that have similar sounds to their father’s name. Artanis for daughter of Arafinwë, Indis for daughter of Ingwë (in versions where she is his daughter and not sister), Celebrían for daughter of Celeborn... Whereas Findis’ name is a combination of both her parents’ names.

Granted, we know the father-names of few female characters, but based on the ones I could think of, this seems to be another of those irritating instances where Tolkien says something holds true for his elves and then actually all instances of that thing in his texts actually are the opposite...

Does someone know a name that would hold to what Tolkien states?
