It Was Always You | Eli x Klitz (The Girl Next Door)
Hi there!
As teased, the brainrot is bad, and so I had to write this fic before writing any of the requests, because I couldn’t focus otherwise.
Anyway, I do hope y’all enjoy this fic!
As always, requests are open. Only SFW stuff for those two, please. And read my Pinned Post before requesting anything. Please and thank you! <3

Lying on Eli’s bed together, side by side, Klitz could feel his heart beating faster with the proximity, the familiarity and the intimacy of it.
Ever since Eli kissed him for agreeing to helping him and Matt with the sex ed film, Klitz hasn’t been able to be relaxed around his best friend anymore. It wasn’t that he suddenly developed or realised his attraction - his feelings - for the other boy in that moment or anything. Quite the opposite, in fact. He realised just how strong this desire was, then.
Before this kiss, he was able to ignore his feelings pretty well. He knew Eli didn’t like him that way, and that was okay, he was at peace with that.
Until he wasn’t anymore, no thanks to that kiss.
He could feel Eli’s lips on his for hours after. He wanted more. And he couldn’t have it.
In a way, it was destroying him. It has only made it harder for him to be around Eli, after all. Something he’d been trying to avoid at all costs ever since he realised that he was in love with his best friend, out of the fear of losing him.
“Hey, Klitz,” Eli interrupted Klitz’s train of thought.
They both turned their heads to look at each other.
“Yeah?” Klitz replied, adjusting his glasses.
Eli swallowed thickly and licked over his lips nervously before speaking, “We’ll never stop being friends, right?”
“No, of course not. Why would we?” Klitz answered immediately, frowning as he felt anxiety crawl under his skin, settling in his stomach.
“Well, we’re about to graduate. And all of us are going different paths, studying in different states and all that. So, I don’t know. I was just thinking about how we won’t see each other every day. And then I got scared that- Whatever,” Eli explained, interrupting himself at the end, shaking his head with a grimace, “It’s dumb.”
“I don’t think it’s dumb,” Klitz said, “I’ve actually been scared of that, too. But I don’t see why we wouldn’t be friends anymore. Telephones still exist, so we can just call each other whenever. And we can visit each other when we can both make time for it, you know? We’ll make it work.”
In truth, Klitz has thought about this exact thing every single day for the past year, once graduating from school was on the table and undeniable. He was anxious, of course, and it warmed his heart that Eli was just as scared of it; but that only made him believe that they were going to make it work even more.
Nodding, Eli smiled, “Yeah, I guess you’re right. And let’s be real. You won’t find another friend like me anywhere else, so the possibility of being replaced is slim to none!”
Playfully, Klitz fist-bumped Eli’s shoulder with a smile of his own, “Dude, shut up.”
While Klitz’s heart was still beating far too fast, he felt more relaxed after this little heart-to-heart. He was happy to know that no matter what, Eli wanted to always be his friend.
______
About half a year later, it was finally time for Eli to visit Klitz at Yale University.
They’d been phoning every other day for those six months or so. Their respective lives have been going great, actually, while still keeping in regular contact. That was exactly how Eli had dreamed it would be, and so he was ecstatic to say the least. He was also very excited to see his best friend again, after only ever hearing his voice for so long, which was still better than nothing, of course.
As he drove up to the parking lot on campus, Eli felt his heart beating rapidly. It wasn’t just his happiness that caused it, but also some anxiety.
Sure, Klitz was his best friend and from what he’s told him that hasn’t changed at all; but he still had this nagging fear of Klitz having moved on from him - especially after seeing him again. What if that was what would be the last straw for him?
Shaking his head to get rid of that thought, Eli scoffed at himself.
Nothing like that was going to happen, and so he should just suck it up and stop feeling so anxious over all those very unrealistic possibilities.
With a deep breath, Eli got out of his car and walked up to the dorms’ entrance, where Klitz had told him to meet him. He spotted him immediately. It wasn’t hard to, considering that he only knew Klitz and that he was also one of the taller guys anyway.
As soon as they saw each other, they both had huge, bright grins on their faces. Eli could feel his face stretch like it hasn’t in a while. He ran up to Klitz and threw himself at him, hugging him tightly.
“I’ve missed you, man!” Eli exclaimed happily, feeling Klitz’s arms squeeze him back just as tightly.
“I missed you too,” Klitz said and let go of him. “Do you wanna go to my room or should I show you around first? Or do you want to do something else?” he asked, then.
“Dude, let me arrive first,” Eli chuckled, “Your room sounds good.”
Klitz nodded and told Eli to follow him inside.
On the way to his dorm room, a lot of other students passed them. And to Eli’s surprise they all greeted Klitz kindly.
“Man, you’re really popular here! That’s cool,” Eli commented, once they entered Klitz’s room. Luckily his room mate wasn’t currently in.
They sat down on Klitz’s bed.
Chuckling awkwardly, Klitz shrugged, “Yeah, I guess I did become popular here. Although I’m not sure how or why, to be honest. And it’s not because of the video! Before you even say it.”
“Dude, okay, jeez,” Eli raised his hands in surrender, grinning, “Still. Good for you. I’m glad you’re not just being pushed around anymore.”
“Thanks,” Klitz smiled.
______
Until Klitz’s room mate came back, they talked about everything and nothing, just enjoying each other’s company like they always had. Something that made Eli truly happy.
There was this one thing, though, that wouldn’t allow him to be at ease completely. And that thing was that he’s realised that he might have not so platonic feelings for Klitz. He started to question his emotions, regarding his best friend since elementary school, ever since he kissed him on the mouth on the spur of the moment, way back shortly before they had graduated.
The feeling it brought out in him wasn’t what he had expected - and really, he didn’t know what he had expected anyway, but it wasn’t this electricity that sparked with the kiss; or the way he could feel it lingering on his lips hours later; or how he started noticing certain things he hadn’t before afterwards.
By now, he was certain that he was in love with Klitz, and he had absolutely no idea what to do with that information.
Whenever he thought about it, he got overwhelmed in all kinds of ways.
But most of all, he just wanted to tell his best friend that he had feelings for him; even though he’s spent so much time making all those gay jokes around him. In reality, he only made them because he desperately hadn’t wanted to be found out. He had thought that if he acted like he was disgusted by things that make you seem gay, he would be safe from assumptions. After all, he had already known that he was gay. He just hadn’t known that he was gay for Klitz.
Right now, they were walking through campus, as Klitz showed him around with a constant smile on his lips. It was so great to see him happy at Yale. Eli was seriously glad that everything had worked out the way Klitz had wanted it to.
Ever since they had gone to middle school, Klitz’s dream was to go to Yale University someday. And now, here he was, happier and more comfortable than Eli had ever seen him, when it wasn’t just the two of them at either of their homes that is.
At least, Eli was happy with and for him until a girl came up to them and practically tackled Klitz with a hug, which he laughed off shyly.
“I’ve missed you in our study group today,” she said, pouting and still with her arms around Klitz’s neck.
Eli would usually describe her as a ‘hot chick’, but not this time. Because he was busy being focused on how this interaction made his blood boil.
And when had he become so jealous? He’s really had too much time dwelling on his feelings for Klitz in those past months.
“I told you my friend was coming to visit,” Klitz said, gently prying her arms off of him. That calmed Eli down a little; although having him say ‘my friend’ kind of stung for some fucking reason.
“Hi, I’m Eli,” he greeted the girl instead, trying to ignore the way his body and mind were currently screaming at him. Klitz wasn’t his boyfriend, as much as he wished he was, and so he had no right to be jealous.
“Right. Hi, I’m Stacy,” she responded with a fake smile, looking Eli up and down with a really strange look on her face. She looked mean. “Well, anyway. Just don’t miss it again or I’ll get lonely there, hm? I’ll see you later, Klitzy, bye!” Stacy exclaimed, hugging Klitz again before leaving, practically bouncing off.
Eli hated the fact that she had called him Klitzy. Only he was allowed to call him that. And Matt, of course, but that was different.
“You okay, man?” Klitz asked Eli sincerely, once Stacy was gone, as he rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.
“Yeah, I am,” he lied, averting his gaze before his face could betray him of how not okay he was and how not cool he thought all this was either.
Eli wished he could just tell Klitz about his feelings, make him his and call it a day. He didn’t want anyone else to be so close to Klitz, which was unhealthy and dumb, and he knew that; but he already felt like he’d been losing Klitz to university as it was, and seeing this only made that fear a lot more real.
“Can we get outta here for a bit? Like, I don’t know, dude. Let’s just go somewhere where we can be alone. Too many smart fuckers here,” Eli said instead, chuckling slightly at his own joke.
Klitz nodded, “Sure, I know a place.”
They walked for what felt like an eternity in comfortable silence, not that Eli really minded; even if it gave him another opportunity to go down a rabbit hole about his feelings for Klitz, which only annoyed him a little.
The thing was that he’s made a decision on the way. He’s made that decision when he drove all the way to New Haven, already, but he hadn’t been too sure about following through with it. Now he was.
He was going to confess.
The worst that could happen was for things to get a little awkward between them for a while, but he was willing to risk it, for as long as he didn’t have to feel so suffocated by his own emotions anymore.
Once they’ve reached a patch of greenery way off campus, they sat down on the grass, leaning their backs against the trunk of a huge tree that cast them in a nice shadow, saving them from the burning sun. They were pretty much alone there, fortunately.
“You look like you wanna get something off your chest,” Klitz said after a few moments, startling Eli a bit. Was he really that obvious? Or did Klitz just know him too well? It could have been both.
“Uh, yeah, actually,” Eli hesitated, briefly looking at Klitz before staring at the ground, while he picked at the grass nervously, “I just wanna make sure you know that I’m not joking about this now. And I know I’ve made plenty of jokes in that direction before, but I swear this is not one of them.”
“Okay,” Klitz said, sounding uncertain and elongating the ‘o’.
“It’s that I’m in love with you, Klitz. Like, I have actual feelings for you that go far beyond our friendship. And so, yeah. I just wanted to tell you that. It’s okay if you don’t feel the same. I just hope we can still be friends anyway, you know?” Eli rambled on, admitting what he’d been trying so hard to ignore.
There was silence.
And then there was a hand on Eli’s thigh, gentle and warm, and so familiar.
Klitz squeezed Eli’s thigh, silently asking him to look at him, and he did.
Relief coursed through his body when he saw Klitz smile at him.
“I love you too,” Klitz confessed quietly, “I’d thought you wouldn’t feel that way about me, so I- I don’t know,” he chuckled awkwardly, “I’ve just wanted to tell you forever.”
“Well, aren’t you lucky that I just did,” Eli grinned and Klitz returned it.
“Can I kiss you?” they both asked at the exact same time, laughing heartily, before they moved in for their first real kiss.
As soon as Eli’s lips pressed against Klitz’s, he felt this electricity again, such as this absolutely intoxicating happiness that bloomed in his chest, making him feel giddy with excitement.
They kept on kissing for a while, enjoying the feeling, the warmth, and the intimacy, despite the open setting.
When they parted, Klitz’s lips were spit-slick, deep red and a little swollen. Eli guessed that his own didn’t look any differently.
“So we’re officially boyfriends now, right?” Eli asked, laying his hand on top of Klitz’s, which still rested on his thigh.
“I’d say so, yeah,” Klitz said, nodding for emphasis.
“Cool,” Eli smiled.
“Cool,” Klitz responded in kind before he leaned in to kiss him again.
